ELECTIONS IN FRANCE
RESULTS OF FIRST BALLOT. PARIS, April 23. One hundred and seventy-five candidates were elected in the first ballot. Of these there are 72 Democratic Republicans, • : Left Republicans, 15 Radical Reoublicans, 16 Radical Socialists, 4 Republican Socialists 14 Socialists, 13 Conservatives, and no Communists. The second ballots for the remaining seats take place on Sunday. The majority of the successful candidates have declared themselves supporters of the Government’s policy. EFFECT ON THE BOURSE. LONDON, April 23. The Bourse is pleased with the French elections, and Government Stock rose •sharply,. .The real, mirid of France will not be. revealed, till April 29, nevertheless M. Poincare’s mandate to stabilise the - franc is likely to be renewed. The Communist vote numbered 115,000. The Paris correspondent of The Times says that second ballots are necessary in" 430 constituencies/ largely due to the numerous candidates and to split votes. ACTIVITY IN ALL GROUPS. PARIS, April 25. Though they are satisfied with the results of Sunday’s ballot, the Moderates insist that final judgment should not be based on it. Possible combinations between t’ e Leftists constitute an unknown factor. There are great activities at present in all the groups. L’Humanite states that the total number of votes cast for' the Communists W’as 1.069,680, compared with 875,812 in 1924. M. Briand is still ill. A specialist has been summoned.
