BRUICE COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Bruce County Council was held on Tuesday, and was attended by Crs A. Renton (in the chair), D. M'Gregor, J. Lockhart, D. Gardyne, V. Wilson, A. King, W. Bell, J. Clark, W. J. Sheat, H. M Driver, and T. Johnston. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was received from the District Engineer of Public Works, requesting that all claims for subsidy on completed works be forwarded as soon as possible to allow payment to be made.—Received. The Secretary of the Stirling School Committee wrote drawing attention to the state of the footpath leading to the school, and asked that it be repaired.— It was decided that the* matter be left in the hands of the member for the riding (Cr Renton) and the chairman, with power to act. The District Engineer wrote advising that to ensure uniformity in the wording of the resolutions passed by local bodies in regard to the maintenance by them of roads metalled out of Government grants, the Public Works Department had framed a standard resolution for use throughout New Zealand, the wording being as follows:—“That this council agrees to maintain efficiently in future, to the satisfaction of the local representative of the Public Works Department, the road metalled under these proposals.” The writer asked that the council consider the resolution and forward a certified copy.—Agreed to. The Secretary of the Greenfield branch of the Farmers’ Union forwarded a request that provision be made to deal ■with flood water on the Balclutha-Tua-peka Mouth road, in the vicinity of Waitahuna bridge.—Cr King said that the road referred to was a main highway, and that the onus of putting it in order should lie on the Public Works Department. —It was decided that the letter be forwarded on to the Public Works Department. INSPECTOR'S REPORT. The Inspector (Mr J. H. Bateman) reported as follows on the work done in the various ridings during the past month:— Balmoral No. 1 Riding.—Maintenance metal and gravel have been put down on Greenfield-Newton road. Balmoral No. 2 Riding.—Maintenance metal has been put down on the HillendMount Stuart road. Mr H. B. Roulston has done free carting for 30 chains of metalling on'the road leading to his homestead. Crichton Riding.—The contractor has completed the gravelling on the Lovell’s Flat to Kaitangata road, and this has been brushed up with the grader. Matau Riding.—A portion of the Lake side to Stirling road has been graded during the month. Inch-clutha Riding.—A start has been made with the gravelling contract on Smith’s road,. and portions of the roads at Randall’s and Young’s have been graded. Glenledi Riding.—Nine culverts have been put in on Akatore Coast road, and seven culverts on the road leading in to Mr Richards’s.

Waihola Riding.—Good progress is being made with the earthwork and metalling contract on the Waihola to Taieri Mouth road.

Clarendon Riding.—Two . new culverts of 9in pipess have been put in, and surface work done on the Circle Hill road. Mount Stuart Riding.—Maintenance gravel has been put down on Adams Flat road and Crichton Station road. A start has been made with the gravelling contract with gravel from the tailings at Hanley’s ford. Toko. Riding.—Mr Scanlan has done five chains of free gravelling on the road leading to his property at Helensbrook. The woollen mills have completed tfie gravelling on streets in their township. Several men have been working in the Clarkesville and Southbridge drains during the month. MAIN HIGHWAYS. Dunedin to Invercargill.—The gravelled portions on this highway have been graded in during the month. Clarksville to Springvale.—Gravel has been graded in and a start made with maintenance gravel between Glenore and Clymer’s bridges. Balclutha to Tuapeka Mouth.—Boundary signs have been erected on this road. The report was adopted. RANGER’S REPORT. The Ranger reported that 16 cattle and seven horses had been impounded during the month. FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £1755 9s 6d were passed for payment. The County Clerk (Mr L. W. Potter) reported that of the rate collectable (£13,619 13s lid) £12,976 'l7s 9d had already been collected. TENDER. The following tender was accepted:— Carting 350 yards of Clutha River gravel from Clarertdon to lhe Clarendon-Berwick road. —M. Marshall, 3s, per yard.
