Over 1000 passengers left Auckland by steamer for Sydney last week. The royal mail liner Aaorangi carried 575, and 452 loft by the Marania. Included among the Marama’s passengers were 20 Chinese, 16 of whom had been in New Zealand on temporary permits. The other four were New Zealand residents on holiday. Another Chinese who tried to travel on the Marania was brought ashore by the police shortly before sailing time. He nad been in New Zealand on temporary license, but nad overstayed the period to such an extent that a warrant had been issued for his arrest. Unfoiiunately for him he was recognised.
