DUNEDIN BURNS CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING. The thirty-seventh annual meeting of the Dunedin Burns Club was held on Tuesday evening in the Returned Soldiers’ Association clubrooms. Mr T. Gilchrist presided over a fair attendance. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, said he regretted that , the attendance was rather small, and with such a good membership it was expected that the attendance at the annual meetings would be much larger. There had been an increase M members durin rr the year, but the subscriptions from the members were not meeting the expenses of the club. There was only one way to increase the membership, and that was to induce other people to join. He appealed to those present to make ar. effort to ..ecure new members. He thanked the committee and members for the support given during’the year. The club was indebted to the secretary, who had borne the burden of the work. Mr Cook’s heart was in his work, as it was a labour of love to him. Mr Gilchrist concluded by saying that the past year had been very successful generally. Mr W Nicolsbn seconded the motion. In referring to the strength of the club, he said that there was always a number of people coining to Dunedin, and an endeavour should be made to secure new members. The club had been fortunate that the concerts had proved "such a success. He did not think it advisable to increase the membership fee. Taking everything into consideration, the past year had been a successful one for the club. They had a plendid committee, every member of which worked harmoniously for the good of the club. The committee had one object in view, and that object was the advancement of the club. Mr J. Wallace, in reference to the report, said it was remarkable how the standard of the monthly concerts had been maintained during the past 37 years, especially when the fact that the club did not pay a penny to any performer was considered. He felt sure that the club had become a strong asset in the community. The report and balance sheet were adopted. Th following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr J. Hastie; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Bowie, 8.A., and G. Currie; committee —Messrs D. Auld, W. Richardson, D. Paterson, R. M'Kinlay, J. Wallace, W. Nicolson, C. A. M'Lean, D. J. Calder, and Neil M'Donald; auditor, Mr J. Brown; secretary, Mr A. Cook; treasurer, Mr A. M’Millan. Mr Hastie, on taking charge of the meeting, thanked members for electing him president. He appreciated the honour, and would do his best to live up to the splendid traditions of past presidents. Mr Wallace referred to the excellent work carried out by Mr W. Brown, one of the first presidents, who was mainly responsible for putting the club in its present successful position.—lt was decided to forward a letter congratulating Mr Brown on attaining his eighty-seepnd birthday and thanking him for 'the good work he had done for the club in the ■ -st. A vote of thanks was passed to the choir for its services cheerfully rendered during the year. Mr Hastie referred to the work carried out by Mr T. Gilchrist as president, who had taken a great interest in the club and had brought it through a most successful year.
