one. of the really’ great' men in trotting, •find'a,i“-friend- to every*mart.” During the function mqny .references* were -made .to the 'happy relations existing between the .two trotting clubs .in Auckland/ and-, botween trotting and’racing, ■ • , , • CANTERBURY DOINGS, : • ■ , •By OnsEEV£B. ; With so many ineetiugßl in progress ‘at Easter there is no' necessity for owners-to 'dead their horses; far/from home at that pewibd. This applies fnore partibularlv to the North' Island; For that reason the outside ■ patronage accorded - the' autuinfa meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club'is usually restricted, although tlie leading events ca.n‘ bp relied on to attract good support. ■ It-is specially pleasing, therefore, to-find'so.many visitors engaged this yp-ar. Owners .will not announce their indefinitely'for. fa few’days, but'all the indications, point tp fields, being much stronger .in visitifig. competitors this year than has been the-, caii? .at any Easter meeting -in recent years., Otago . stables are well represented. in thp minor races, while it is expected that a good contingent of North -Islqnd,horses will be on hand-, to make a successful meeting. ■ The visiting, horses .which are engaged in the Great Easter' Handicap are the most representative lot attracted by this * race in recent years. Reremoana, Cirnabue, Shirley, grown Area, Tresham, Black Mint, and Ring .Boy make-up a strong North Island contingent; Set Sail, Booster, Solrose, and? Gold Brick are a worthy of southern visitors; while Eulalie, Nincompoop, Stormy, and Sudden Storm will look, after Ricearton interests. Eulalie, Reremoana, Booster, and Crown Area are in most favoup at present. Eulalie retains her brilliancy,' but her recent public form has not been altogether Satisfactory.

■ln the , Great Autumn Handicap Riccavtqn. claims Rapier, Footfall, Thorndale, Storipy, Sir Roy, Assurance, Front Rank, and Don Jose, material for a good contest,-even without-the visitors, who aik well represented by . Hynannrt, Tresham, Lady Desmond, Oratpix. Black Mint, and Ring Boy, from the North Island, with . Set Sail as the sole contender from Otago. So,-far as can be learned, most of the visitors will be on the scene, and thfe race contains great possibilities. RapieE Hynanna, Footfall, and Set Sail, who head the. list, will ensure class, while Lady Desmond, is mentioned, frequently as one likely to cause trouble. There are othep smart lightweights, and at 'present the. event looks very open, though the work' on the tracks during the. next few days may alter tlie position. ' The Champagne Stakes- promises td arouse a good deal more interest than was ■ anticipated a. .week ago, when Goblin Market appeared to stand out. The Absurd youngster continues to do good work, and probably he will start'favourite, but apart- from the prospects of the' visitors, Ricearton stables will have two other worthy candidates, as Chide and Full Feather have come on a lot lately. The track doings of these thrbe will pro-, vide a lot of interest during the next week. Thej’ will have to meet some visitors, but. popular opinion inclines to the chances of the local performers. : The field for .the Challenge Stakes Will not be large, and the first day’s' form will throw much light on the prospects, afe Rereinoana, Cimabue, and Eulalie will have run in the Great Easter Handicap,, while Goblin Market and Concentrate.are. in the Champagne Stakes. It may there-, fore be a question of-judging between- thechances of two horses.

.* Eulalie.-has been striding- along freely in lifer work, and she looks in great fettle.. There was nothing wrong, with her condition, however, when she raced at’Tren-. tham, but she failed badly at the business end of.the Challenge Stakefe after looking-, like a winner half way up-.the straight!: Judged? on that form she cannot run out. more than- six furlongs in the best conipany. • Nincompoop‘bears a bright appearance, and on his recent work he looks to be at his bett. He has-run some good races this season, and he is a Great Easter possibility? * Stormy looks well at present, and he has bee# gaßdping very attractively; He is engaged in: the Great Easter and . the Great Autumn, but the former will suit him better- than the longer race on any form he has -shown. Sudden Storm has not been set any searching tasks since she raced at Trentliam, but her condition is all right. Provided’ she jumps’ out* smartly she will play a leading partlin the Grfeat Easter under, her light weight, but her, barrier manners are a big handicap,.as in,a- field like this she cannot afford to give her opponents a start. - Rapier, looks very fresh as the result of an- easy time -since his return from Trenthgm. He is now bowling along freely again,, apd he should be at his best in the Great. Autumn Handicap. He ranks as favourite at present, and with all hjs weight he will run a good race, provided he does liis work well during the next few (days.. Footfall has been a source of ’worry to liis trainer, during the last, few months, but there are signs that he is coming banto form. , His final gallops will be watchfed with great -interest,' as he only has- to be at his best to , keep, ‘the opposition’ bu?y in the Great' Autumn Handicap. Thorhdhl'e * has coirie'through the season in fine style, and he look? a better hoiise than ever. He..’is good up to a’inileiafad a-quarter, but; ,the •'.final, stages of the Great A-utumn 'may' trouble him. . Roy js another who- has to‘ be taken on trust’ at g mile and’g-half; likewise-Assur-ance,.whose form this season has nbt been satisfactory. The case of Front-Rank:is rather . different., . She . has. failed repeatedly when stamina was required, and a mile and a-quarter appears to. be. her limit. ; ' . The three-year-bld Don Jose has -not been highly' tried in public over any distance. He has shown fair .promise, however, and he has. been galloping 1 well -on the tracks, so it need occasion np 'surprise, if he developed into a good winner. ; Starflight has been galloping in reproved form, and. he will be worth keeping in mind for coming engagements; ■ . Prickles raced well at- Trentham,. and she may do even better on her next- Appearance. , . Viscount and Cotsefiere, who are uU ually; worked-together, are commencing to

fellow useful form. Corsetiere is *the better of the pair at present, but both should be useful next- season.; > - * - Quarterdeck has not ifecpvered from- thfe lameness which prevented.her from.racinfe at: Treqthajn, and. , the-. exact; nature of the trouble has not beek located,", . : Te -Awhina js hittipg-out freely in her work..- She has won two haxik Taees lately, and she may add to her record before the season closes.- . • - : T..H.'G-illett'.has’ left for Auckland with Money Order and the three-year-old Satr«ip,‘ botfa of whom should do well on the trip.- Satrap’s: chief'objective is. the “t. Leger. and it is hard to pick one to-heat 1 , him. Money Order usually races well at Ellerslie. It is probable that the pair will remain in the north for the, Mahawatu meeting.' - , . Martarma is spelling at present, but F. Christmas expects -to have the three-year-old in easy work- again soon, in preparation for spring engagements. Economist and Kenmore have been returned to their owners. Thej-; are unsound, and if is- unlikely . they will be persevered with. The three-year-old Broadnjoos, by Panmure from Heatherbrae,, has; rejoined Ciitts. Bros? team, after a lengthy spell. The. first batch of yearlings from Sir George Clifford’s Sfonyhurst stud have arrived, at Ricearton,. and Cutts Bros, will, make an early start to break them in. They are a chestnut colt by Winning Hit from Equipment, a, chestnut gelding by Winning Hit from Flitawav, and a bay colt by The Ace from Winnftig Way. The last-named is a half-brother to WinJ 1 ’ 1 }?, while the Equipment colt is a half-brother to- Centrepiece and Full Feather. 'Considerable interest will at- ’ tach to the . Winning Hit youngsters, as they <cre the first of *their sire’s- progenyto be- handled. The Easter meeting of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club will be cornnienGed -at» Addington next : Saturday, lhe acceptances are not available at present, but < the heavy .nominations leave no doubt that fields -will be large, while the presence .of all. the best horses will give, an assurance of high-class sport. . It has been decided to remove the judges box at Addington, and to provide, new quarters for the judge, who will in future, do his work from an elevated position in the western corner of the stewards stand. This will necessitate moving the .winning post about 40ft nearer the bend out of the straight. It is intended to have the alterations completed m time for the Easter meeting. The race track, at Add’jigton is now open for training operations, and it is in very fair order, despite the cutting up ,it received while alterations were beiiw made to the corner going out of the straight. Although the Easter meeting is close at e rT^ work is being done at Addington. There are so many raee meetings that horses are raced into, form, and they do- not require much fast work on the trailing track. ' . Logan Park showed to great advantage m a work tout one morning last. week. He is very ’well, and he may win. a good staKe-at the approaching meeting. ; ,i ro fter-Yo Un g Blake has been working well lately, and appears to be at the top of his form. Locanda Boy has done well since he came to Addington. He js a good stayer, and he should be a winner before long. . Double event has furnished a good deal during his spell, and he is pacing veryfreely, thugh still far from ready. Logan Holm looks well, but he is now on a mark from which we will find it hard to win. lie has been best known as a sprinter but he will, be tried at two miles. H. Gaskell is working a brother to Logan Ho,m. He is built on-similar lines to hrs speedy brother, and fie should, be an earlv winner. . Acre has been on the light side for som‘e time, but he is building up capitally. He should show, improved form the next time ,he starts. • _ * . The trotter Merrijigs went to pieces when Jie was brought here from the West Coast- a few months ago. . He is now settling down to steady work, and as he has plenty of.sxieed he should win a raqe soon.

N. L. Price has Kola Boy in work again. He has become very docile, and he is fast getting into racing form. Count Dee continues to please by the way he. trots in. training. He requires some racing to bring him to his best. Peter Bingen, who, resumed work recently after a spell, is improving fast,’and he will-be ready to. race <a little later on. W. J. Morland’s young. pacer by key de Oro from Belette i$ not being hurried. He has good action; and he looks like /making a higliTgrade .horse; ■ , i . .The Australian trotter Western Voyage is-doing plenty of useful Wark, -but he appears to have gone back since he raced at New Brighton. The maiden pacer ,by Author Dilldn from Marie Tenyiest, who was for some time trained, by E. C. M’Dermott qt Addington, will in future be raced on the West Coast. The trotter Master Audo has gone into J. M'Lean’s stable - at Addington. Wastewood- will in futiwe be trained at Addington, where his; owner is working two maiden pacers. ; Audio Bell is showing a good deal of -improvement in his work.. He raced badly for some;tinie, but now.-lock& like recovering. his forrii. ’ R. Dunn has taken over the Pacer Nepia; who* has been " in several stables, but -has.-not raced, well. He has a good, turn of speed, but he will not keen to His : gait. ' ' ” ■ Curfew Bby is training ton, the right way. He has not'raced since his successful trip to Southland" a : few months .ago, but he may be seen again later in the season. ’ Vesuvius, a pacer who has gotten to a tight mark without -winning much' money, is in good’ form at ; He' is an attractive pacer over any distance, -and he: is improving. . '. • Cannonball has shown a lot : of speed in his recent races; bnt has 4 not kept steady. He is * very well) and ‘ only requires to go kindly ‘to win a goofl stake.' • ‘ ■ ..In- Spite* of.',a dull dav''"' tb a few misty showers thef,e<was<p good- attendance at the' Horovata '.rates, -one of the Oldest Cbuntry fixtures-in Canterbury., and the racing -whs excellent. King’s Jester, the' i winner of the Trial; Plate'is a three-year-old ’-gelding by - Olareneenx from Sweet Smile, by ■ San Francisco from ■ Winning Way, the*’dam of Winning Hit. This'was i the first success of King’s Jester, but he

should soon get ’. some * more money; aa he is a smart galloper. Si-'ir Stranger II showed a lot of speed when he rail second to King’s Jester in the Trial Plate, but he appeared tp be stopping a bit at tfie eiid. Later 'in-the day, in the, Racecourse Hill Hack Handica?> came with? a string late run to get third. . She is an attractive looking mare; with a good style of galloping, and she . will wjn' races .later on when the company is not.too select. . Moratorium experienced, no difficulty in beating hiS three opponents in the BanP or High-Weight Handicap. He is in great- fettle at present, and he will be hard to beat in similar events at Riecarton; Thorndale lived, up to his reputation for consistency by winning .the Horovata 'Gup* .It was a great race, : the ' whole field coming hon\e in close order; Thorndale was a trifle.*lueky, aoid he only, got his opening on the rails at the'entrance to the straight through Starflight stumbling and interfering with Battle Colours. It was, however, a very attractive performance, :on the:part of the winner, who carrjed his big, weight in fine style. He has been improving steadily with racing, a - n< Tc - runs - ou t !a mile and a-quarter well,. If he can manage the extra two furlongs he will have to be reckoned with in the Great Autumn Handicap.- . Battle Colours was very unlucky in the Hororata Cup. After being last to get going he was soon in_a good position, and he was running particularly well at the home turn when he suffered interference dufe to Starflight stumbling afid bumping him. He lost a good deal of ground, and even then he came on and beat all but Thorndale. With a clear run it looked as if he should have woi], ..and, with average fortune, he should soon secure' a good stake.. ' The three-year-old Starflight, by Archery from Star'dancer, was responsible for a good performance in the Hororata Cup. He was out setting the pace from the start,-, and still was going well when he stumbled near the entrance to the straight. He is a very useful galloper, and he. looks Certain to pay his w*ay during the autumn, as in addition'to sessing speed he can stay,Sir Roy was travelling, on in fine style at the finish of the Hororata Cup. The race should do him good, and he will be worth keeping in mind for his engagements later in "the season. Possibly tie will get some money at the autumn meeting, at Ricearton. Fair Exchange, who scored a narrow win in the Sandown Hack Handicap, has always been ,a . useful hack galloper, but frequently he has disappointed supporters in his races. It was o-nly after a resolute . finishing ,effort that he captured the stake on this occasion. After appearing to find trouble keeping his place in the early stages he made another appearance in the concluding. event, but after jumping out well.-he soon dropped back, and' he never looked dangerous again., Fair Exchange is not likely to get past the moderate class. Scoff showed ' plenty o.f speed in the Sandown Hack-Handicap, and even though the atmospheric conditions were against ■ a horse who is affected in'the wind, it looked as if he should have won. - Later in the day he' was started again in the Racecourse Hill Handicap. The weather had become worse by this time, and doubtless that accounted for him compounding quickly before going quite five furlongs. Waihemo, ,a four-year-old gelding by Quin Abbey* from Tinoreka, carrying the same colours as Star Stranger 11, made his first public appearance in the Sandown. Hack Handicap, registering a useful performance to finish - third, as he put up a stone overweight. He is well endowed with pace, and he will, win races later' on/ Polydectes ran out seven furlqngs very resolutely when he won the Brackendale Handicap. The, field' he beat was not strong, especially, when Sagittarius settled his ehgnee* by. going wide at the home turn, but the, foraj was an improvement on what he sliowed.at Waimate, when he failed badly at the end of his races. Polydectes. may do ‘ some more winping before the end- cf the season, but he has no pretensions to* good class at present. Malmsey scored a meritorious win in the Racecourse Hill Handicap, in which she showed superior stamina to her opponents. Earlier in the day she was showing her best pace at the finish of the Trial Plate, and the extra journey in the concluding event was in her favour. Malmsey will win more races, but she will need to improve a lot to' get beyond useful hack classes. Greyfinch ' was a hot favourite for the Racecourse Hill Handicap, but her performance was disappointing. She set a strong pace from the start, but after leading to the straight- she collapsed very quickly. The Greyspear mare goes fast, but she lacks stamina.

WELLINGTON NOTES. (From. "Our Own Correspond ■March 29. The third Saturday afternoon meeting of the Wellington Trotting Club for the season passed' off successfully last Saturday. Mr Harry Davey, stipendiary steward; came up from Christchurch and officiated for the last time. It is pleasing to kno.w that the N.Z. Trotting Asfeociation recognised tlie good ,work'he did during the time he was connected with the sport. It is - not' expected that, the action of the Manawatu Club in getting- in on the Wednesday and Thursday before the Marlborough meeting to be- held at Trentham vV'ill have any ill effect on the South Island meeting. Local racegoers may wait for the meeting at Trenthani, instead l of journeying to Awapuni. Trentham owner-trainer W-. Young made a good start at the Westport meeting with Avdfinnan and Carrigallan. He is to-do the West Coast circuit before returning. Mr T. H. Lowry has disposed of the two-year-old gelding Second Wind (Grand Court —First Blow), who ran second at Avondale in the spring, and he was shipped to ■ Sydney, to-day. Cosmqt’G was to have raced at Master- : ton? meeting,-but t she struck /herself, and. may not- ip -consequence be -seen out at the Easter •.meetings? : -, Trentham-trained’ horses will be scattered : at the Easter meetings. -Captain Gage Williams' will ;pr'ob’ably take Wild Pigeon and Staghunter to Auckland. Black Mint and Ring Boy are both still in the Easter and Autumn. Both are engaged at

Wairarapa, where Bing Boy won the Gold €up at New Year time. Modern won a hurdle, race at Napier Park, ahd will co to Feilding for the jumping .races. H. Lorrigan has booked accommodation at Riccarton for Cimabue, Oratrix, and other members bf his team. 8. J. Reid will probably go .to Tauherenikau, where most of the local stables will be represented. J. M'Combe’s team may be racing at Wairarapa, where the South. Island-owned Star Stranger II (a, name that should not Be allowed) is also entered. R. S. Bagby is getting a big team to train at Opaki. The yearlings purchased by Mr E. E. Jolly, of South Australia, at the. Wellington and Sydney sales last season, have so far this seaon failed to do any good, and this week they were transferred to Bagby’s care. That trainer also has the three yearlings bought for Mr Jolly at the recent sale, making half a dozen horses in all. Mr Jolly is a game buyer, and it is hoped he meets with some good-luck in the future. Bright Glow, who ran two good races at Trentham, is to race at Ellerslie at Easter. The runner-up i n the Thompson is nicely placed in the Easter Handicap with 8.5.

AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By Digger. F. Stenning Las had Memsahib in work a long time without asking her to race; ar *d the Quin Abbey mare is now in fine condition. She was schooled over the big timber last week, and gave a dashing display of clean fencing. There are no outstanding ’chasers in the Mangcre Steeplechase on Saturday, and Memsahib should have a good chance with her light weicht. S. Henderson will be her pilot, so that she will be well served in that respect. Last season Wiltshire developed the bad habit of falling repeatedly in steeplechases after he had shown great promise. The Waikato horse has improved immensely as a Hat racer, and with a return of nis •confidence as a jumper would give the Mangere Steeplechase field no end of trouble. Acceptances are not available at time of writing for the Easter Handicap, but the ruling favourites for the big mile at Ellerslie are Night Glow, Joy King, and Gascony. So far as he has been tested Paganelli has proved himself a very brilliant- walloper. There is really no reason whv he should not see out a mile journey, and 3.5 is by no means a big weight -for a class three-year-old over this distance in the autumn. On a dry track Paganelli may seriously test the best of a good field. Kuightlike, Pure Gold, and Gesto are a tiio of southern juveniles who arc expected to dispute the issue of the Onslow Stakes at Ellerslie. Auckland is weak in two-year-olds this season, but the best of Jamieson’s pair, Perception and Footpad, may give the above-named trio a hard struggle to take this prize away from the north. Perception is a fine type of horse that I expect to lose his maiden status with very little delay. Evidently benefited by her racing at Pukekohe, Princess Ronnie invariably runs the best gallop of the morning at Ellerslie, and she is now very fit. The Polydamon mare likes to hear her keels rattle, and the firmer the ground at Easter the better she will be suited. Glenotns is regarded as the safest conveyance at Ellerslie, but he is losing his speed. Recent racing has, however, rendered him a thoroughly fit horse, and he will find support at Easter for his reliability among a number of horses that may lack seasoning. There is a disposition to favour the chances of the top weight division in the Brighton Hurdles, and Wedding March, reported from Cambridge as a fit horse, Archibald and Pouri all have their following. Archibald is doing splendidly at Ellerslie, and is bound to be hard to beat. Of the northern lightweights Potoanui' may be the best. He looked a sure winner in running at Paeroa, bat his rider lost a stirrup, and pulled up. Potoa-. riui is just coming right, and should see out a strong two-mile on Saturday. The possible favourite may be the Wanganui horse Elysianor, of whom very xavourable reports 'have come north. Hack fields at Ellerslie are always pretty solid, and the Easter races for this class promise to be no exception. A trio that should repay watching during the coming carnival are Modest Boy, Liaison, and Winsome Boy’. Modest Boy should have walked in at Franklin, and he has improved in the interval. One of his stablemates in Cynthia N. is also pleasing in her work and appearance. Two wins in two starts is Gold Money’s record to date,-and the Paper Money filly will throw down • the gauntlet to the best of her age in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes. With Raasay, Episode, Prince ■ Humphrey, and others engaged, Gold Money is set a severe task. Since winning at Te Aroha she has worked fast without going seriously against the watch, and thus no real time is available on the full extent of her speed. It can be said, however, that she is full of promise, and without making a definite statement of opinion of her chance in the classic, I feel sure that she will run a very creditable race. The running of Corinac at Whangarei would influence the support accorded the son of Magpie at Ellerslie. He still runs about in his races, but he can stick well, and on the big track at Ellerslie he may give a good account of himself in the Autumn Handicap.

RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

SOUTHLAND RACES. First Day—Wednesday, March 28. The Southland Racing Club’s autumn meeting was opened in showery weather, but in the afternoon the weather cleared, and became qujte pleasant. The track was a bit on the soft side, but dried up towards the close of the card. A fairly large attendance provided a slightly better gate than on the opening day of last year’s meeting, and the card produced some good sport and close finishes. Rin Tin Tin soon took charge in the Juvenile Handicap, but he had to be ridden out to beat Nightmareh, who would have been far more troublesome if he had been up •' as they ran ( round the top. Camisader won decisively, and Celerity 11, although putting in a strong finish, owed her success to Frivol carrying Overdrawn wide when making the home

turn. The English mare.thus got'.through on the rails and saved more ground than the two she defeated by narrow margins. Overdrawn suffered most, and still finished fairly close np. ; Taki outstayed the opposition in the Steeplechase, and this was particularly composed of Maungamoe and Scamp, the latter of whom commenced to tire 'about three furlongs from home. Royal Fashion went out early in the race, and but for the accident he might have got amongst the money. Circulation looked like an easy winner when she drew to the front after entering the straight in the Southland Cup, but she .finally had to be kept at it to state off Overhaul, who got a bad run all the way until nearing home. Tintoretto was badly ridden. He was last into the back stretch, and there raced up to the front-as they-ran round the top, with the natural result that he faded out. Hushabye and ■ Sunshower had the finish of the New River Trot to themselves and Latin Quarter stayed on best in the Stewart Island Handicap. Apache and Sehottische carried strong support in the Tradesmen’s Handicap. Miss Winkie and Sehottische made the early running, and were joined by ; Apache as they turned for home. Sehottische then dropped back, and, under strong pressure, Apache just beat Miss Winkie. During the day £13.741 went through the totalisator, or £1709 in excess of last year’s figures. ROSLYN HANDICAP, , Of 150sovs. Six furlongs. I P' Treacy’s br g Camisader. by Erector „ “Whiplash, 4yrs, 9.0 (F. Voight) 1 2—Edie and Mitchell’s Coomassie 8.6 , _ . (L. J. Ellis) 2 s—B. A. Frivol and Overdrawn drew out four lengths from King Balboa and Black Duke a s they ran round the top, where Celerity IT commenced to move up. Frivol carried Overdrawn wide at the turn, and left an owning for King Bafboa. Black Duke and Celerity 11. Nylotis fell at the post and rails at the turn out of the straight and Soldier’s Dream was lucky to survive the same obstacle after carrying away at the double. Scamp, Maungamoe, and Tuki were running in fairly close order going along the back, whilst Blazing Light and Soldier’s Dream were already losing ground. The leaders raced on and Scamp, Maungamoe, and Tuki were well clear at the stand double for the second time, and were still racing in close order. Along the back Scamp and Maungamoe were commencing to tire and Tuki. although having the whip shaken at him, took charge, and staying on well, led over the last fence to win by five lengths. Maungamoe finished three lengths in front of Scamp. Ranui was 200 yards away, fourth, and Blazing Light and Soldier’s Dream also finished the course. Time, 6min 17sec. Once in the back Tintoretto raced up to the leaders and was in charge at the far turn from Bilbo, Spearmaid, and Circulation, whilst Heather Lad had dropped back last, and Overhaul was making a forward move. Bilbo fell three furlongs and a-half from home, and Tintoretto led Circulation to the home turn from Queen Balboa, Equerry, Heather Lad, and Overhaul. Circulation took charge after entering the straight, and was well clear at the distance. She, however, had to be shaken up to beat Overhaul, who finished half a length away. Sehottische was four lengths away, with Soltoe and Fairy Herald close up. Time, Imin 43 l-ssec. Second Day—Thursday’, March 29. The meeting was concluded in beautiful weather and before a large attendance, including a large number of Canterbury farmers, who were the guests of the club. The track was in excellent order, and provided what seemed to be perfect going. The proceedings opened with the Myross Handicap, for which Camisader went out a strong favourite, but his supporters got a poor run for their money. Coomassie set the pace, but faded out, and Cupid’s Dart just beat Money Mine. Camisader was in a hopeless position there furlongs from home, but finally ran into third place. Nelbar started favourite for the Invercargill Harness Trot, and, although she looked a sure winner at a mile, she finally had to be driven right out. to beat Decoy Bells. Booster was backed down to a short price in the weak field which opposed him in the President’s Handicap. The favourite began smartly, but was steadied until reaching the straight, where he was -sent up. and measured off Miss Winkie to beat her by half a length. " The Invercargill Steeplechase proved to be a good betting race between Scamp, Maungamoe, Nyanza, and Royal Fashion, whilst Greenstone also carried fairly good support. Scamp looked a bit light, and tired after .his first day’s exertions, and two mistakes took a good deal of the steel out of him. Greenstone set the pace for the final mile, and won, but not with a great deal to spare from Maungamoe, who pulled up rather weary. Nyanza pulled up lame, and also ran with the disadvantage of his rider losing both stirrups early in the race. Royal Fashion tipped out at the post and rails when racing with the leaders about a mile from home. None of the others made any show. A middling pace was set over the first four furlongs if the Awarua Handicap, and then A. E. Ellis, on Queen Balboa, attempted to steal a march on the field by suddenly clapping on full sail. Overhaul was, however, promptly sent after her, and, getting on terms, Didham took no risks, but made the best of his way home. As they entered the back stretch all the field except Solzia were under a good pull, and the sudden change of pace surprised some oi the riders, with the result that they were giving away a start over the final six furlongs of the journey. Two well-backed chances for the Bluff Handicap in Takaka and Latin Quarter received a bad passage. Takaka got

squeezed back l ast in the early part of the race, and Latin Quarter struck trouble about three furlongs from home. Prin cess Mafalda, who was always prominent, lasted long enough to beat Latin Quarter, and Takaka finished a good third. With a better run it looked as if Takaka and Latin Quarter would certainly have more seriously troubled the winner. Vasiliki was a bit too smart for the opposition in the Dash Trot, and won i from end to end after establishing what looked to be an unbeatable advantage in the first half-mile. A good day’s sport concluded with the Winter Oats, which was another interesting race. Apache started a slightly better favourite than King Balboa, who did not obtain too good a run, but was in a handy position and waiting for an opening at the home turn. Fairy Herald obliged by going a bit wide, and so handicapped Lucy Locket, who was on the outside. King Balboa was driven through the opening, and in a fighting finish beat Lucy Locket by a neck. Fairy Herald wag close up third, just in front of Wingatui. After the sixth race an inquiry was held into the riding of some of the horses, and as the result of the investigation B. Brodie, the rider of Felony, was suspended for 10 days for careless riding and interfering with Latin Quarter. During the day £13.505 10s went through the totalisator, compared with £11,674 last year. The total for the meeting amounted to £27,246 10s, compared with £23,706 ’at last season’s fixture. Saturday, March 31. The Hororata Racing Club’s meeting was not favoured by the best of conditions. After rain overnight, the morning was dull, and there were some light drizzling showers. In spite of the doubtful weather, the attendance was quite up to the average, and the totalisator figures showed a slight increase, the amount handled being £7983 10s, compared with £7517 last year. Some of the fields were small, but the racing was full of interest. The Hororata Cup was a particularly fine contest, and Thorndale registered a very attractive performance under a big weight, but he was a trifle lucky. Starflight stumbled and interfered with Battle Colours at the home turn. This gave Thorndale an opening on the rails, and but for this it is probable that the other pair would both have beaten him. Star Stranger II led King’s Jester to the straight, where the latter put in a strong run, getting up to beat Star Stranger II by a head. Clarke, horse owner, of Melbourne, has visited New Zealand for fishing. The weliknown sportsman arrived to-day on the Marama, and intends to stay in the Dominion for some weeks. Mr Clarke says he is in no hurry, and will remain in Rotorua for a while. To the fishing fraternity of South Canterbury -Mr Clarke is very well known, since he is a familiar figure with rod, line, and roll in the Opihi River at Temuka* where excellent sport is enjoyed; but ho is more widely known as the owner of that great three-year-old Trivalve. who won the Melbourne Cup, the two Derbies, and in the autumn the V.R.C. St. Leger, the Governor's Plate, and the King’s Plate. Mr Clarke is confident that Trivalve will win the A.J.C St. Leger at Randwick next month and says that Limerick will have to be. in tip top form to beat his hors-j in the weight for age events at the same meeting. OTAGO HUNT CLUB. The seventeenth annual meeting of the Otago Hunt Club wa s held "in the office of the secretary (Mr C. R. Caflfin) on Tuesday evening, and was fairly well attended. The president (Mr B. S. Irwin) occupied the chair. Before , proceeding with the business of the evening the Chairman referred to the death of Mrs J. Bain nee Miss Mowat, who had been one of the earliest members of the hunt, and one of their most capable followers. He also made reference »o the death of au old committee man in

Mr A. B. Armour, and to'.the death of • son ;6f their handicapper,';Mr J. Henrys. Motions of -sympathy with tho .relatives of tho deceased wore carried in silence. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet the Chairman said that last year quite a number of successful meets' had been held. The committee realised that the Hunt Club was not a racing body, but was out to encourage _ young people to ride horses and to acquire a love for them. The club, had good kennels, a capable master and deputy master and a capable huntsman and whip. No on© could have cavilled at the services •of these officers during the past season.—(" Hear, hear.”) The speaker re ferrod to tho improvements which had been carried out at the kennels and to tho good'work done in this connection bv Mi A. D Edgar, and expressed the thanks of the club to the Agricultural and Pastoral Society for the help it had given them. This year the hunting season would open a little bit earlier than usual, because it was _ necessary for owners of ' hunters to in readiness for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting, which would begin on June 2, ..The Dunedin Jockey Club, to assist their club, had put on hunters’ races in place of the hack steeplechase, which in the past, had been on the programme each day. It. behoved members, therefore, to see that their horses qualified in order that they could take part in these races. It would be necessary to have four qualifying runs before Jun e 2. The speaker referred to the gift of three dogs from theOakland Club, of Victoria, and spoke of the friendliness of the- act, and went on to say that financially the club had had a very successful year, the rac e meeting showing a profit of nearly £7OO. Their annual race meeting was one of the popular meetings of Otago. Thanks were due to their honorary starter, Mr D. Jolly, for the excellent work he had done at the meet ing. The speaker made mention of the fact that as a result of the refund of per cent by the Government on totalisator turnovers, the club had received about £2OO per year for three years. The club had had no power to expend this monev unless for some improvements to the course of the club, and it handed over the £6OO to the Dunedin Jockey Club, whose course it used. A change, however, had been made by the Government, and a chib could now expend. its money in other directions if ;t so desired. If members encouraged the young people to come along and learn to ride the Otago Hunt Club would have proved its value to the community.— ( Hear, hear.”) Thanks were due to the farmers in the surrounding districts for the use of their properties for the hunts.— (Applause.) • ■ Mr T. Fogg, treasurer of the club, seconded the motion. He said that thev had made about £287 clear, so that they had come out very well indeed.—(Applause.) The motion was carried without further discussion. Mr L. C. Hazlett was appointed patron of the club (re-elected). Mr B. S. Irwin pre*’ dent (re-elected). Mr R. Acton-Adanis. vicepresident (re-elected). There was only the requisite number of committee men nominated—Messrs R. Conn. W. Hastie, J. Lindsay and J. Mowat, and they were declared duly ■ elected..
