THE CANTEEN FUND.

OPERATIONS DURING PAST YEAR. WELLINGTON, March 2. At the meeting of the New Zealand Canteen and Regimental Trust Board, the balance sheet showed the total funds to be £193,601. During the past year £4500 was expended in providing relief for unemployed returned soldiers, most of this sum being utilised in providing work. The money made available was subsidised by local bodies and private employers, which brought the total sum used for relief >f unemployed up to £9050. A grant of £1979 10s was made last year to the Trentham scholarship fund towards tbe education of the children of deceased and disabled soldiers, while the grant for the same purpose this year is £2OOO, making a total of £5979 10s to date, utilised for the purpose. The policy of the board remains the sam6, viz., to preserve the corpus of the fund for future use in the relief of distress, when the patriotic and war relief funds at present being used for the same purpose have become exhausted.
