In the fierce fight against the flames an a smoke during the Otahuhu fire on Monday week members of the local Girl Guides organisation bravely ventured with supplies of drinking water for firemen, and did good service in dressing and bandaging their wounds and providing refreshments (reports the Auckland Star). There were 15 casualties. The Boy Scouts and the St. John Ambulance also assisted in the difficult task, and a lead of hose was lent bv a local firm.
—No paint will ever be required in the new laboratory erected for Bristol University at a cost of £200,000. All tbe joinery is of teak, and bronze has been used for all the metal fittings.
The ratepayers of Palmerston North rejected by 11 votes a proposal to "spend £55,700 on improvements to the water reticulation. The proposed loan of £16,000 for sewerage extensions was agreed to.
