Monday. A large number of social functions have been given during the week for Mrs Willie Sargood, of Melbourne, some taking the form of morning teas and bridge parties.

On Monday evening Miss Sise invited guests to bridge in honour oi Mrs Willie Sargood at her residence, Queen street, when an enjoyable time was spent.

Mrs Gallaway invited a few friends to afternoon tea on Wednesday afternoon at the tea rooms, Sandymount, when several guests motored out and spent a pleasant time, the guest of honour being Mrs W. Sargood.

On Wednesday morning Miss Ulrich invited friends to her residence in Cumberland street, to morning tea to meet Mrs Sargood.

The Horticultural Society held its autumn flower show in the Early Settlers’ Hall on Wednesday afternoon, when there was a splendid’attendance. Masses of gladioli were exhibited all round the room, and excellent blooms of many new varieties were shown, some being of quite new colourings. A wonderful display of fiowers of the Phmnix Company’s was shown to great advantage by its background of a rich black velvet curtain, which threw the colours of the flowers out most exquisitely. Asters of many varieties and colourings were to be seen down the centre, whilst some very fine blooms of sweet peas caught the eye of everybody. The table decorations were very artistic, and one of deep orange Montbretia and maidenhair fern was very light and pretty, also one of orange marigolds with yellow Moutbretia, whilst a scarlet geranium one was distinctly brilliant. Many beautiful bowls and baSkets there were, all so artistic that it must have been a distinctly difficult task for the judge to place them in order of merit. Congratulations go out to the society.

Miss Betty Reeves was a hostess at a small dance on Friday evening at her homein Park street in honour of Miss M. Macassey (Wellington), when an enjoyable time was spent amongst the young folk.

A number of parties have been given during this week and last week in honour of Mrs Arthur Barnett. Miss L’nda Barnett, and Mrs Robert Hudson, all of whom left on Friday morning for an extended trip to England and many foreign countries. A large circle of friends was at the Railway Station, with good wishes for a very happy and successful trip.

Mrs James Hutchison entertained friends at bridge at the Otago Women's Club on Wednesday in honour of Mrs Roland Fulton, who is leaving very shortly for England. Amongst those present were Mesdames Ramsay, Marshall Macdonald, Hilton, de Clive Lowe, Barron, Halsted, Leslie Mills, Lough, G. Gallaway, Evans, Phillips, and Brewer, Misses Cook and Wilkin.

Mrs Leslie Mills invited a number of guests to a dinner party at her residence, “ Piccadilly,” when a most enjoyable time was spent after dinner in dancing and playing pingpong. Some present were Mr and Mrs T. Bridgeman. Mr and Mrs Guy Sinclair, Mr and Mrs D. Reid, Misses Reid, Milne, Acton Adams, Clapperton, L. Williams, Reeves, Finch, Johnstone (Timaru), Hartmann (2), and M. Thompson, officers of H.M.S. Laburnum, Messrs Sinclair, Holland, Vallange, Edmond, Gore. Wilson, Hislop, and Laidlaw, and Dr Gcerin.

On Thursday afternoon Mrs E. Halsted gave a large bridge party at the Otago Women’s Club, when bridge was played in two rooms. Mrs Halsted received her guests in the bridge room, and was gowned in smart cinnamon brown, with a small closefitting hat of the same colour. Guests present were Mesdames James Friedlander (Auckland), Maurice Myers (Wellington), Brewer, Cameron, Haggitt, Duncan, Bundle, Wilson, Benjamin, Matheson, Finch, Hutchison, de Clive Lowe, Henderson, Cheeseman, Black, Scherek, Cotterill, Gallaway, Phillips, Oldham, Theomin, Lough, Bridgeman, Edmond, and Barclay, Misses Graham, Reynolds, Neill, and Finch.

A delightful farewell “at home ” was given by Mrs William Hudson and Mrs Ambrose Hudson at the Somerset Lounge for Mrs Robert Hudson and Mrs Arthur-Barnett. The room looked charming with its beautiful floral decorations. The hostesses received at the entrance. During the afternoon delightful music was enjoyed, supplied by Messrs Gordon and Beath. Songs were also rendered by Mrs Smeaton, Mrs F. Anderson, Mrs Allan Gray, and Mrs Wilson, and much appreciated by the guests present. Delicious afternoon tea, cakes, and ices were enjoyed at small tables. Amongst the guests present were Mesdames Hudson, sen., L. Hudson, Graham, Jacobs, Gamble, Smellie, Barnett, Hanlon, Finlayson, Oram, Chance, Watson, Hislop, Robertson, Logan, Elsoin, Timson, Matheson, Smith, and Gray, Misses Reid, Greenslade, Curline, Timson, etc.

Mrs Marshall Macdonald gave a small luncheon party at the Otago Women's Club in honour of Miss Linda Barnett. Other guests present were Misses P. Cheeseman, L. Williams, Feichley, Clark, Campbell, Nicol, etc.

On Wednesday Mrs Eustace Macassey gave a morning tea party at the Tudor Hall in honour of Miss Molly Macassey (Wellington) and Miss Muriel Frazer. Present were Misses Haggitt, Neville, I. Hart, Flach, B. Reeves, and Roberts.

On Friday Mrs E. Theomin entertained the three 'musicians —Messrs Leo, Jan, and Mischel. Cherniavsky—at a luncheon party.

The St. Clair Ladies’ Golf Club opened Its season in beautiful weather on Monday, when a large attendance of members was present. Medal matches and putting competitions were played throughout the day. Mrs T. K. Sidey (president) welcomed the members in a few well-chosen remarks, and wished the club all success for the forthcoming season. Later in the day a motion of appreciation for the work done by Mrs J. Kilpatrick. -the late secretary, who has gone to Oamaru, was passed. Delicious afternoontea was provided by the club.

On Friday afternoon Mrs M’Kellar gave a most enjoyable “ at home ” at her residence, Pitt street, in honour of Mrs Willie Sargood and Mrs Barclay (Australia). The hostess received in the drawing room, and was gowned in a charming black chiffon velvet

robe. Delicious tea and dainties were muck enjoyed in the dining room, where the table was artistically arranged with crystal vases filled with deep pink sweet peas and gypsophila. Mrs Sargood. was attired in a navy gown, with hat to match, and Mrs Barclay in fawn, with a hat of the same colour. Others present were Mesdames Ramsay, E; L. Macassey, Oldham, Macassey, Finch, P. Barr, Laidlaw, J. Sinclair, Hazlett, Cogan; Cotterill, L. Wilson, and Matheson, Misses Shand (2), Graham (2), Webster, Macassey, Sise, Farquhar, and Ramsay.

On Tuesday evening Mrs V. Jacobs gave a dinner party in honour of Mr and Mrs Robert Hudson and Mr and Mrs Arthur Barnett at the Carlton Hotel.

Mrs M. Cameron gave a morning tea party at her residence, Driver's road, as a farewell to Miss B. Croft, who is leaving for England on Monday. The guests present included Mrs Hay, Mieses M. Reid, B. Reid, Mallard, Spedding, etc.

On Thursday evening Miss Lily Holmes gave a bri.jge party at her residence; Union street.

The fete in connection with the Free Kindergarten, which was held on Saturday afternoon, proved a huge success. The weather was all that could be desired. and the lovelygarden and grounds of Mr Solomon’s, where Were seen to great advantage m the brilliancy of sunshine. Sir Charles S.atham opened the fete. There were many forms of attractions, the tea tent and ice tent be ng well patronised, also the sweets, fiow-er and produce stalls. The baby showheld during the afternoon was the cause of much interest, whilst a fortune-teller had a queue waiting all the time. The band played delightfully, and judging by the large attendance present the kindergarten should benefit very considerably, thanks to all those who contributed and gave their able assistance.

A small bridge party was given by Miss M. Stephenson at her home in St. Clair for Miss M. Macassey (Wellington). Present were Mrs Maurice Myers (Wellington). Misses N Barr, Haggitt. J. Halsted, M. Haisted, and - M. Fraser (Wellington).

Mrs A. Emellie gave a farewell tea party at her residence, “ Irmo," Green Island, in honour of Mrs Arthur Barnett and Mrs Robert Hudson, when a delightful time was spent. Amongst the guests present were Mesdames W. Hudson, A. Hudson, Smith, V Jacobs, C. Graham, R. Hudson, and Elson? (Christchurch).

The seventh annual croquet championship tournament was opened at the Punga lawns Mrs Bridgeman (the president), in a few well-chosen words, welcomed all present, rhere were competitors from invercargilL Balclutha, Christchurch, and Oamaru.

Mrs Harman Reeves and Mrs Carney (Christchurch) motored through to Queenstown during the week.

Mrs C. Rattray, Mrs Frank Fitchett, and Miss Gwen Gallaway left by motor on Friday for the Franz Josef Glacier.

A delightful afternoon was spent at the Southland Women's Club on Friday, when Madame Gitta Alpar was the guest of members of the Music Circle. Large bowls of pink, blue, and lavender larkspur made the reception room particularly attractive. Miss Crofts introduced Madame Gitta Alpar, explaining the object of her visit to Invercargill. She then read two letters of introduction, one from Sir Robert Stout and one from the Mayor of Wellington. Musical people all through New Zealand had willingly assisted Madame, Miss Crofts added, and the people of Invercargill were doing their best in the very short time at their disposal. Madame Alpar. in her charming, broken English, then spoke of the very great

kindness she. had received from all New Zealand. She hg.d found so many good hearts, accomplished artists, and wonderful accompanists. She explained a little of the folk music of Hungary, drawing a charming picture of her native land with its cot-

tages and bright gardens. At the gate of each cottage was a desk where little folk, boys and girls, played, danced, and sang. Madame Gitta Alpar never sings in private houses, but yielded to the wishes of the members of the Music Circle, and sang two Hungarian felk songs, with a vivacity and charm which delighted everyone. Mrs A. E. H. Bath played the accompaniments. On Thursday evening of last week, Mr gnd Mrs G. S. Edie, of Birchwood Station, Southland, entertained a large number of friends at a dance to celebrate the coming ȣ age of their daughter, Bessie. The wool-

shed, where the dance was held, was quite transformed for the occasion, being decorated with palms, white, pink, and heliotrope streamers. Coloured balloons and Japanese lanterns gave it quite a festive air. One corner was arranged as a drawing room, while at the other end the supper tables were concealed by curtains until later in the evening. Mr and Mrs Edie and their daughter received their guests, Mrs Edie wearing a black georgette frock hand-worked in Oriental colours, and Miss Edie lavender georgette patterned in sequins of a deeper tone. M'Lean, of Pine Bush, was married to Frank Charles, elder son of Mr and Mrs C. P. Johnson, of “ Grace Hill,” Mornington, Dunedin. The church was beautifully decorated .with mauve and pink flowers by friends of the bride. The Rev. J. L. Robinson officiated at the ceremony. The bride, who was given away by her brother, Mr James W. M'Lean. of Coronet Peak Station, Queenstown, wore a long-sleeved French model frock of white georgette charmingly beaded in silver. Her white tulle veil was beautifully embroidered and arranged with a cap and coronet of orange blossom. She wore silver shoes and stockings, and carried a bouquet of cream and pink flowers, looped with streamers of *■ cream ribbon. The two bridesmaids were Miss Georgina M'Lean. sister of the bride, and Miss Edith Johnson, sister of the bridegroom. They wore dainty twin frocks of almond green georgette, with tight-fitting bodices trimmed with rows of tucks and slightly-flared skirts with picoted hem lines. A mauve flower adorned the shoulder of each frock. Delightful poke bonnets of green georgette showed touches of silver.

Both wore silver shoes and stockings, and carried bouquets ,of pink and mauve flowers. Mr Harold Johnson, brother of the bridegroom, was best man, and Mr William M'Lean, brother of the bride, was groomsman. Early .in the afternoon the young couple left by motor on their honeymoon. The bride travelled in a coat of Prussian blue with collar and cuffs of grey Persian lamb, and small blue felt hat with ornamentations of Bteel. On their return Mr and Mrs Johnson will reside at Ben Lomond Station, Queenstown. OAMARU, February 24. Mrs Darling and Miss Darling have returned from a few weeks’ holiday at Lake Hawea, Mrs Cameron and Misses Cameron, of Papakaio, have returned from Dunedin. CHRISTCHURCH, February 25. The Canterbury Jockey Club held its summer meeting on Saturday. For a race meeting it was an ideal day, and seldom has the gathering of feminity on the lawn looked more attractive. BLENHEIM, February 22. The visiting Wellington bowlers, representing no fewer than 10 of the clubs in the Wellington Centre, were the guests of the Blenheim and Riversdale Clubs on Saturday afternoon. The weather was ideal, and the Blenheim green was in excellent order, although one pr two of the rinks at Riversdale were somewhat on the rough side. Afternoon tea was dispensed at both clubs, and a large number of ladies were present. Some of those there were Mesdames C. Mills, Bull, G. A quiet and pretty wedding took place in Napier this week when Miss Agnes Griffiths, daughter of Mrs E. Griffiths, Priestly road, was married to Mr Walter P. Barclay, the well-known All Black footballer. The Rev. C. E. Hyde officiated. Their future home will be in Auckland.

Mrs I. D. Blackie, who is leaving Waipawa, was met by the members of the Waipawa Women’s Institute, and presented with a beautiful china floating bowl. The President (Mrs G. W. Bibby) in making the presentation, spoke of the good work done byMrs Blackie during the time she had been secretary. Mrs Blackie duly responded. Mrs E. R. Lee, of Cambride, entertained some of her friends at tennis on Saturday afternoon. Those present were Mrs B. Christophers, Misses B. Lee, A. Nolan, J. Mackereth, Hewitt, D. Nolan, Robinson, O. Christophers, E. Mackereth, and J. Nicoll. A jolly time was spent at tennis on Saturday at Mrs Norman Bank’s home, Cambridge. Play was continued till dusk, some close games being played. Those present were Mrs W. Stopford, Mrs R. M’Caw, Misses T. Banks, Crowther, V. Banks, B. Crowther, Messrs R. M’Caw, J. Horton, King, R. D. M'Farland, and V. Banks. Mrs E. R. Gresham has returned to Hamilton from a visit to Wellington. Miss A. Brown, of Cambridge, is on a visit to Tauranga. Miss J. Denning has returned to Hamilton from a trip to Australia. Miss D. Hall, of Hamilton, has left on a visit to England.

Mrs A. W. Beveridge, of Hamilton, is on a visit to Tauranga beach. Mrs W. H. Parkes, of Auckland, has been staying In Hamilton. Miss F. Pcacocke, of Hamilton, is spending a holiday, in Napier.

Mrs 8. Graham, of Te Kuiti, has been staying with relatives in Hamilton. Mrs Lunnsden, of Hamner, is on a visit to' Hamilton. AUCKLAND, February 23. The Victoria League held an "at home ' last Thursday afternoon in their fehortlar.d street rooms, when Lady Dhapel Wolseley, Miss Janet Murray and Miss Brown, of London, and Nliss WaxXdy, of Sydney, were the guests of honour. Mis H. Bayly was hostess 1. t Saturday morning at a tea party given for Mrs Cave r rance, of Wanganui, who is at present the guest of Mrs Wake, Remuera. Among those present were" Lady Lockhart, Lady Nolan Mrs A. Bayly, Mrs B. Fraser, Mrs C. Tewsley, Mrs Polson Mrs C. Fraser, Mrs Alexander, Airs JU. Murphy, Mrs E, H. Reid, and Misses Fraser, Lindsay, Rees, and Nolan. Miss Goldie is visiting Wellington, where she is the guest of her sister, Mrs Bond. Miss Kitty Horsley left last week on an extended visit to England and the Continent. Alms Bulloch-Webster is the guest of Mrs Horace Hodge, of South Taranaki. Mrs F. J. Roileston and Miss Rolle-ston returned to Timaru last week after a short stay in Auckland. Mrs Leo Horrocks is at present the guest of her father, Mr R. H. Quilliam, in New Plymouth. Lady Stringer gave a morning tea party at the Tudor tea rooms last Saturday, when a number of young people were invited to meet Miss Rose Blair, from vv ellipgton. Among the guests were Miss Stewart, Alis-i Hawken the Misses M. and V. Jackson, the Misses R. and C. Kainger, Miss CarrickRobertson, and Miss Vaile. Mrs Douglas Hunter is visiting Carterton and is staying with Airs H. E. Jackson Kent terrace. WEDDING. A quiet but pretty wedding took place recently at the Strand Salon, when Nora Isobel, daughter of Air S. Dalrymple and the late Mrs Dalrymple, of Auckland, was married to Herbert H. Barrs, son of Mr and Mrs Barrs, of Melbourne. The Rev. Tulloch Yuille officiated. The bride, who was given away by her uncle, Mr J.’ R. Blues, chose for her gown a pretty salmon charmeuse, the uneven hem of which was latticed with silver trimming. She wore a hat to tone, and at the waist line a sprig of Scotch heather, for good luck. A bouquet of pink sw-eet peas completed a charming toilet. The bridesmaid, Miss Kathleen Salmond, wore a soft green crepe de chine, with hat to match, x, 0. Dormer, of Dunedin, was best man. Mis Blues, aunt of the bride, looked smart in black satin with a champagne coloured vest, a pretty violet hat, and a posy to tone. Mrs Fred. Dunn, of Christchurch, cousin of the bride, wore a pink frock and small hat to match. Air and Mrs Barrs left later for the north, the latter wearing a smart navy costume and crimson hat. Airs Barrs leaves many friends in Dunedin who will wish her every happiness in her future home, which will be at Darfield, near Christchurch.
