Stronach, Morris, and Co., New Zealand Loan and Alercantile Agency Company, and Otago Farmers’ Co-operative Association) report as follows:—-At the fortnightly sales on Tuesday medium-sized catalogues were offered to a full attendance of buyers. WALLACETOWN STOCK SALE. INt ERCARGILL, February 21. there were good yardings of all classes of stock at tho fortnightly sale at Wallacetown to-day. Taken all round, the sale was quite a good one, prices in almost every instance being as good as. if not better than, late ruling values. Aluch interest was shown in tho fat lamb section freezing buyers operating freely for good killers, and consequently good values were obtained. Some specially good heavyweight lambs went to butchers, up to 35s per head being paid for these. Fat Sheep.—The yarding was a representative one, but comprised considerably more ewes than has been the case for some time Fat lambs were conspicuous by tho smallness of their numbers. It was really a small yarding, and the prices realised were quite as firm as at any of the previous sales this season. Fat wethers improved in the earlier part of the sale to the extent of about Is 6d per head on last sale’s values. Fat ewes sold on a par with those of the previous sale, the standard price for all qualities, averaging 23s 6d a head. The prices obtained at. the auction may be quoted as follows:—Extra heavy-weight wethers up to 34 s 9d; good butchers’ wethers from 26s 6d fo 28s 6d; lighter sorts down to 255; extra prime heavy ewes to 28s; good freezing ewes, 23s 6d; lighter down to 12s; extra heavy butchers lambs to 355; good freezing lambs, 26s 6’d to 295; lighter sorts down to 24s 6d.

Fat Cattle.—The yarding of fats compared favourably with that of the last sale, but comprised very few well-finished steers, with the result that these rose in value to the extent of 20s per head. Prime cows and heifers were forward, in the usual numbers, and sold well at ruling rates. A few good vealers were forward and met, a keen demand, the bulk of the steers being purchased by graziers. Extra prime bullocks sold up to £l3 17s 6d; good medium weights _ brought from £lO 10s to £l2 10s. while lighter sorts sold at prices ranging down to £9 Extra prime heifers made £lO 7s 6d; medium weights, £8 10s to £9 10s; lighter down to £5 10s; extra prime cows to £10; medium weights. £6 10s to £8: lighted to £4 10s: good vealers from £2 to £2 10s; runners to £3 10s. Store Sheep.—This yarding was a full one, comprising some good forward rape lambs, a few lines of wethers, and a fair proportion of aged ewes. Practically the whole of the yarding was cleared at auction, prices being on a par with those riding at country sales. Good forward mixed sex lambs realised up to 225, with good ewe lambs to 24s 9d, and forward wether lambs round about £l. A nice line of store two-tooth wethers sold at 22s 6d, while a line of forward four-tooth brought 26s 6d. Aged ewes sold at 5s to 15s, according to age and condition, and a line of medium two-tooth ewes was passed at 28s.

Store Cattle.—There was a fair yarding of mixed quality stuff. Steers sold up to £8 ss, yearling steers to £4 10s, and. steer calves to £2 15s Empty cows brought prices ranging from 30s to £5.

SOUTHLAND MARKET REPORT. INVERCARGILL, February 24. GRAIN. Oats.. —Since last report there has been something in the nature of a set-back in values, buyers’ ideas being now 3s 6d per bushel, f.0.b., a.i., for A grade Gartons. The business that has been done lately has been something in the nature of forced purchases for immediate delivery. Some sellers were able to get rather better values, up to even 3s 7|d having been paid. The general. impression is that the market will stabilise round about 3s 6d for A’s, and 3s 3d for B's, though at present it would be difficult to find sellers at these figures, f.0.b., s.i., Bluff. Fine weather for harvesting still continues, and in some cases leading in has already commenced. The harvesting of the crop in good condition seems reasonably well assured.

Chaff.—ln the entire absence of any outside .demand, little business of any nature is being done, but the price to growers is still maintained at the old level of £4 5s per ton on trucks, grower’s siding, for the requirements of the local trade.

. Ryegrass.—-There has been a little activity with northern centres for early deliveries of new crop in the undressed state, sales having been made at from 2s lOd to 3s 3d per bushel, on trucks, Invercargill, for seed of a good character, and on the basis of a germination of 80 per cent, on dressing for from 241 b to 271 b seed respectively. Chewings Feecue and Crested DogstaiL are. now being offered by growers, for which the price, depending on quality and germination, in both cases is round about per lb for machine-dressed seed. Light-weight Chewings Fescue is almost entirely ignored by merchants, and similarly Crested Dogstail can be turned over at a reduction of about Id per lb. With an abundant crop the demand for Crested Dogstail is confined entirely to bright seed with a germination of not less than 90 per cent. STOCK REPORT.

The stock market continues good for all classes offering and values have the appearance of being bright right through the season. Fat cattle are coming forward in steady supplies, and last Wallacetown sale showed a slight rise in beef. Fat sheep are also offering freely, and prices are holding their own and inclined to firm. Store sheep are now coming on the market in large numbers, and big yardings are in evidence at all the different centres. Forward rape lambs are selling well, but anything showing hard and lean are harder to quit. Ewe lambs are also selling well, more especially if well-bred Romney sorts, but if bare of the head or ill-bred are hard to quit. Breeding ewes are how being inquired for, and R°od young ewes are selling well and meet with good competition when admitted to auction. Store cattle are also inquired tor, well-bred, good-conditioned steers and heifers meeting with ready sales We quote:—

The grain market in North Ota<n> has not been as animated this week as was expected. Farmers have been busy harvesting, and what few samples of Tuscan v bent that have been under offer have shown a wide divergence between the buyer and the seller. There appears to be an indication on the part of both the miller and the grower to sit tight. A line of velvet wheat has been sold at 7s od per bushel, and a line or two of Hunter s have changed hands in the region of 6s. Inquiries have come for the north for oats and grass seeds, but few transactions have yet taken- place. Barley is under offer, but the maltsters do not appear to be anxious to operate at growers’ reserves. Oaten sheaf chaff is expected on the market next week. The demand is not keen, and prices are not likely to temnt business. 1 Hie .live stock market has been more active than for some weeks past, and as the , winter pastures and root crops are not now regarded as an uncertain quantity dealings in store stock have been more freely indulged in. Store two-tooth ewes have sold at 35s 6d, sound-mouth ewes at 29s 6d. rape lambs at 22s 9d to 23s 9d, according to quality, fat ewes at 15s 6d to 17s 6d, fat wethers at 29s and fat lambs at 275. The "Ceef market has not shown a great deal of activity. Fat heifers have sold at £5 10s to £7, small fat steers have realised £4, dairy cows in milk have sold at £5 2s 6d and £6 7s 6d. Pigs have maintained last week’s prices, best weaners realising from 14s 6d to 16s 6d per head. ADDINGTON MARKETS. CHRISTCHURCH, February 22. At the Addington market there was a heavy entry to-day in the store sheep section. Tile North Island ewes approx: mated- 18.00 p head in addition to which there were heavy Nelson.
