WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The month’y meeting of the Waihema County Council, held at Palmerston oii Saturday, was attended by Crs H. O’Neill (chairman), G. Ross, W. Ritchie, H. &; Sheat, M. M’Cabe, J. Chapman, G. Clark, R S. Smith, and J. O’Connell. On the motion of the Chairman, who mentioned that the county clerk (Mr W. ( M'Gregor) had lost his mother, a motion of sympathy was passed to him and other, relatives, which Mr M’Gregor feelingly acknowledged. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The inspector reported as follo.vs:— Bushey Riding.— It had only been possible to grade on Fleming’s road ii. loose gravel from the sides. Before much could be done grass and thistles wou-d requre to be removed. Goodwood Riding.—Settlement road had become very hard, and there was too much grass to make a satisfactory job of it. He estimated the cost of a bridge at Brooklands at £350 if erected to Public Works standard. The bridge would be 92ft long, and would require to be 9ft or 10ft above the present water level.—lt was decided that the estimate be forwarded to the two parties immediately interested, and that they be asked to what extent they were prepared to assist. Meadowbank Riding.—Formal matters were reporetd upon, and the inspectcr was authorised to have more gravel placed on certain roads.

Blue Mountain Riding.—As to the bridge at M’Donald’s crossing, the length of the crossing was 66ft, and (he bridge would have to be at least 30ft, and the groins a chain long each side. He could not give a definite estimate of the cost, but with secure foundations and with, groins the cost would probably be £4OO. Dunback Riding.—The main highway roads were in good order, and contracts would be started in a week’s time. Green Valley Riding.—General surface work had been done, and maintenance metal spread. The contractor had promised to start the middle of the month. He had been arranged with to gravel the road.—lt was resolved to appoint a permanent surfaceman. Macraes Riding.—He had arranged with' Mills to cart out rock on to Deep Dell Hill, and would get a price from Culling to break 100yds of rock on Ross road.— It was decided to call for tenders for putting Highway road in order. The report was adopted. CORRESPONDENCE.

Mr F. W. Hay wrote asking permission to lay half-inch water pipes across M’Lean’s road, Moonlight.—Granted. Mr J. R. Marks, district engineer, wrote that in connection with the tour of the Main Highways Board, the board proposed to visit the district on the 23rd instant. It was decided to meet the board, at Palmerston.

Mr J. R. Marks, district engineer, wrote asking the council to pass the following motion :—‘‘That this council will set aside each year a sum sufficient to keep the section of the road to be metalled, maintained to the satisfaction of the Public Works Department without calling on the Government for assistance.”—Resolution to be passed. Mr R. Black, Maniototo County engineer, wrote with regard to the Tirioti bridge that the estimate submitted was £450. This left £350 between the two countries, and £lOO to Mr Cameron, who had since paid £5O. The lowest tender was £393, and had been accepted, and during the progress of the work a considerable amount of decay had been found in the old trusses, which were to be used again. The renewal of these faulty posts, plus a little excavation, brought the cost to £457 12s sd.—Received. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote respecting the travelling expenses of members, and gave details.—Matter to stand over for further consideration. A number of New Year greetings were received from various public bodies, the council reciprocating the good wishes. GENERAL. The sum of £23 7s 4d had been received by the county for heavy traffic fees. Accounts amounting to £261 7s 6d were passed for payment.
