AQUATICS. THE PATERSON CUP. The first of three races for Class B out board motor boats for the Paterson Cup under the auspices of the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Club took place on the 9th. The course was three times over the mile on the club’s channel course. Mr A. W. Hazelwood (chairman of the Sailing Committee) officiated. The boats were compelled to slow up on account <i floating kelp. Aloha led at the end of the first mile and the boats then raced almost together over the remainder of the course. The result was as follows:—Miss "Whippet winning by a length: R. J. Paul’s Miss Whippet 1 A. C. Paterson’s Aloha 2 Time, 9min 40sec. RUGBY FOOTBALL. THE WARATAHS IN (FRANCE. LONDON, January 10. The Waratahs made a good crossing to France, and were met at the station in Paris by M. Brennus, and Mr Rutherford, president and secretary respectively of the French Rugby Association. The team goes to Bordeaux and Toulouse, and returns to Paris on January 17. Jack Fords ankle is still torublesome, while A. Tancred’s shoulder is doing splendidly, but is not well enough to permit of his playing. WARATAHS BEATEN IN FRANCE. PARIS, January 12. The South-west of France defeated the Waratahs by 19 points to 10. The Waratahs were beaten in a fast keen game, in which the-Frenchmen’s dash and speed, particularly in the back division, kept the Waratahs on tenterhooks from the start. The Frenchmen overcame the handicap of losing the scrums by good combined work, in which A. Behoteguy was most prominent. The line was always in danger when he had possession. In the second half the Waratahs started well, and hammered away with their usual vigour, but could not break the French defence. DISTRICT TEAMS FAVOURED. PARIS, January 14. In view of the South-west of France’s success against the Waratahs, the newspapers discuss the proposal to abolish all-France teams, substituting regional fifteens. The spectators at Bordeaix hooted and cat-called the national team selectors, crying, “All-France team .s before you.” It is emphasisted that the selection of teams from the whole oi France leads to a lack of combination as the conception of the game differs in various parts. It is suggested that France should be divided into three districts. COLOMBES STADIUM. PARIS, January 12. The French Rugby Union is renaming the Colombes Stadium after Dumanoir, who died at the New Year, in honour of his achievements for French Rugby. LEAGUE FOOTBALL. ENGLAND DEFEATS WALES LONDON. January 11. At Rugby League, England beat Wales by 20 points to 12.

SCULLING. GOODSELL CHALLENGES BARRY. VANCOUVER. January 11. Backers have already filed a challenge on behalf of Goodsell to row Barry again. The latter wishes to row on the Thames in June, though several offers have been received from other places. RIFLE SHOOTING. NEW SOUTH WALES TEAM. SYDNEY, January 12. The New South Wales rifle team to compete at the New Zealand meeting leaves by the Maunganui for Auckland on February 10. A. Darcy, who is unable to go, will be replaced by W. Fulton.
