THE LADIES' PAGE

TABLE TALK.

Monday. The annual meeting of the Otago Women’s Club was well attended on Wednesday afternoon, when the Lounge was taxed to its limits long before the appointed time, every chair being taken. The meeting continued for about an hour, during which time 10 people spoke, and various proposals were made. Mrs Hewitson, who is at present acting president on behalf of Lady Ferguson, spoke on the closing of the club, giving a short outline of the balance sheet, and telling of the extensions there had been made. Afterwards she announced that early in the beginning of the year the club would welcome back their president, Lady Ferguson. Sevefßi .of the chairwomen, on behalf of the various circles, spoke, and it was interesting to note what a large number of members each circle had. The Art Circle, of which Miss Mary Smith is chairwoman, has no less than 300 members. Miss Duthie read the report of the Gardening Circle, which throughout the year has done such excellent work and had such large attendances at all its meetings. This circle has a balance of £26, which is principally devoted to the railway station garden prizes. One only has to see the delightfully kept gardens, laid out and arranged with skill to show what good work is being done. An interesting account was .given of the Motor Circle by Mrs A. Smellie, which has done such excellent work for the hospitals. It has a very large number of willing members, all of whom give up their time and cars to the very best cause. With the pgospect of daily light saving arrangements are being made for the night nurses to have outings. Special thanks were given to the matron of the Hospital, Miss M’Nab, who had helped so much with arrangements. Another suggestion that was made was to have a bridge circle formed, the proposal being seconded. Appreciative remarks by Mrs Wakefield Holmes on the subject of the addition of the Roger’s grand piano were received with great enthusiasm. An other suggestion was that people who had books suitable for boys should leave them at the club so that they could be sent to the post and telegraph boys. At the conclusion of the meeting Sir Charles Statham was thanked for his help to the club, and also Mrs Hewitson and the executive for their work during the year. At the conclusion most of the members enjoyed delicious tea and dainties in the clubrooms, chatting over the year’s doings.

On Thursday evening Dr Emily Siedeberg gave a party at the Otago Women’s Club to the final-year medical students. Dr Siedeberg received the guests at the entrance, and .was gowned in a handsome peachcoloured beaded and spangled georgette. A delightful little playlet called “ The Drawback,” was given by Miss Asliu and Mr M’Callum. A musical trio by Miss Humphrey, Mr de Clive Lowe, and Mr Perry was much enjoyed. Alost of the costumes were of the “ tailleur ” description, a number being of blue or black cloth. Fur coats were much worn, as well as smartly cut cloth ones, of tones, either matching, or sharply contrasting with the frocks.
