It is likely that somewhere off the north-east coast of New Zealand a large whale is nursing a sore tail (says the Auckland Ster). When off the Bay of Islands late last Thursday afternoon the - Government steamer Hinemoa, which arrived at Auckland last Friday morning from Norfolk Island, ran into a school of whales, and one, in passing aero? the vessel’s bows, was struck a glancing blow bn the tail. Although the shock was only of a minor nature, it was sufficient to be noticed by several memb. a of the crew who were in the fo’c’sle. One of the officers of the ship said th T he never remembered seeing more whales on the way from Norfolk Island than he had on this trip. He estimated that over 30 had been seen from the ti: e of leaving Norfolk Island until last evening.
