SOUTH CANTERBURY FISHING.

f TEMUKA, October 28. The heavy nor -westers experienced a few days ago have resulted in heavilyflooded rivers, and as a result fishing has been considerably interfered with. There has been practically nothing doing in the Rangitata, but good bags of fish have been secured from the Pareora with the creeper, and several anglers have been enjoying some excellent sport. The Ohape has also been good for fishing, and the AA aihi and Temuka Rivers have been first class. Odd fish up to It) lb have been taken from these streams, though the fish here are usually smaller, ranging from a quarter to three-quarters of a pound. The Opihi has been sufficiently full to allow of good fishing. A good deal of snow water has*been coming down in this stream lately, and the cold water has not been good for general fishing purposes. During the recent evenings several anglers have been obtaining some success in fishing in the Temuka Stream, and 12 and 14 fish have been quite frequent catches for the evening. A better quality of fish .also is now rising to take the fly, and local anglers generally consider the season’s outlook to be most encouraging. Fishing recently in the Tengawai River a local angler enjoyed a good day’s sport, and landed nine fish, which averaged a little over 31b in weight. As evidence of the abundance of small fish that prevails at present, a Southland angler this week, fishing at the Forks, the junction of the Temuka and Opihi Rivers, caught close on 100 fish during one day’s outing, but none of them was large enough to put in his basket. He caught several up to Ilin in length, but he did not consider these were big enough to' put in his bag.

From now on the fly-fishing will come more into prominence, and as the season becomes busier, there is everj indication of good records being established.
