A DEFAULTING CLERK.

NO GAIN FROM WRONGDOING. AUCKLAND. October 28. Charles M'Kinnon, aged 50, a clerk in the employ of the Mangonui County Council, on a charge of furnishing a false receipt, came before Mr Justice Herdman for sentence. There had been other charges of theft and furnishing false receipts, but these were not proceeded with. His Honor said there was no dcubt that accused kad taken on his own shoulders the wrongdoing of another man. It also appeared that he was endeavouring to repay the money which had been stolen, and that he himself had not prospered as the result of the defalcations. He was quite sure the man had not received any of the moneys which' were the subject of the charges. M'Kinnon was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon, and to repay the amount owing, approximately’ £4.
