Fat Cattle. —There were about 80 fewer fat cattle penned than at the previous fixture, but the quality was there. The easing in the values was least noticeable in prime heifers, which remained firm, but good quality bullocks and fat cows were slightly cheaper. ADDINGTON MARKETS. CHRISTCHURCH, October’26. SOUTHLAND MARKET REPORT. (Fbom Oub Own Cobbebpondbnt.) INVERCARGILL, October 28 GRAIN. Oats.—ln the meantime there is little animation in the market, due largely to the depreciation of. stocks of white oats by shipments to Britain and the Australian States, some inquiries being for Duns, which also are in small compass To for seeding purposes, it is reported that- one line of super quality was sold at 4s 6d, f.0.b., s.i., but current values for ordinary lines are on a basis of 4s for prime, well-milled growers’ lines, f.0.b., 5.1., somewhat inferior quality down to 3s Bd’ Nothing whatever is now being offered by growers, and where deliveries have been taken by buyers for forward purchases stocks in the majority of sellers will be well nigh non existant. The area sown down in oats in that part of Southland supplied by Invercargill merchants is very distinctly less than last season. Chaff. In the entire absence of any offerings from growers in the last two or three weeks values have improved, and for prompt delivery £4 would be paid togrowers for prime quality on trucks, their siding. This is hardly an indication of value due to the existing conditions. Farmers at this time of the year are too busy with the ordinary work of the farm to devote the necessary time for chaffRyegrass and Seeds Generally.— Merchants demands in the meantime 'are confined almost entirely to their distributing trade. The retail demand is distinctly strong, the quantify absorbed for sowing down being much greater’than was anticipated. Stocks of all descriptions are fast diminishing, and several merchants will shortly be forced to buy even ryegrass for the retail trade. Shipping values are on a basis of 4s per bushel for 281 b machine-dressed seed of good germination. Crested Dqgstail for shipment overseas and northern requirements is quoted at Is Id per lb for good, bright lines. STOCK. The yarding at Wallacetown sale on Tuesday was rather larger than usual for some time back, and consequently the prices in both fat cattle and fat sheep eased somewhat. The quality of the fat sheep offered comprised principally medium-class wethers, with a few pens of prime heavy sorts, for which the competition was good, but showed a drop of about 8s on the previous sale. The yarding of fat cattle was in the main of very ordinary quality cows and heifers, with a few pens of very fine quality bullocks. Store sheep are selling well with a good demand for all classes. Fat Cattle.—Extra prime heavy bullocks to £23, prime heavy bullocks £l5 10s to

£l7, medium weight bullocks £ll to £l2 10s, prime heavy heifers to £l3 10s, medium weight heifers £8 10s to £lO 10s, prime heavy cows from £lO 10s to £l2 10s, medium cows £8 to £9 15s, vealers to 355, runners to £3 10s. 1' at Sheep.—Extra prime wethers 545, heavy prime wethers 45s to 48s 6d, medium weight wethers 38s to 42s 6d. lighter to 355, heavy prime ewes 35s to 395, medium weight ewes 28s to 32s 6d, heavy prime ,lambs to 30s, medium prime lambs 20s to 24s 6d.

Store Cattle.—Three-year steers £7 10s to £9, two-year £6 to £7, yearlings £3 10s to £5, two-year heifers £3 to £4. OAMARU MARKETS. . . OAMARU, October 28. The position of the Oama.ru markets lias not shown much change since last week. There may be a few small lines of wheat in farmers hands, but those who are holding are not likely to derive much advantage as the millers have filled their requirements. Indeed, one miller who has purchased more than is necessary for his own purposes has been reselling to the Auckland market.

Few transactions in oats have taken place for some weeks past, and what business has been done has been on a small scale. A grade Gartons are quoted at 2s 8d per bushel on trucks at country stations. V cry little business has ‘been done in oaten sheaf chaff, but a line or two has been marketed at about £3 10s per ton on trucks

The supply of potatoes from North Otago is practically exhausted and merchants are placing then orders in South Canterbury. Grass seeds, such as cocksfoot, cowgrass, and crested dogstail are still goin<* out m fair quantities. Fowl wheat is in request and is selliii” at about 6s per bushel. ° The live stock market is not quite as active as it was a few weeks ago. The forward delivery buying of lambs has practically ceased, though purchases have been made at approximately 23s 6d per head, lhe opening price for the season is beinoeagerly awaited by farmers. In usually well-informed circles it is considered that the opening prices will be at least p halfpenny higher than was the case last year.

there is a good inquiry for hoggets, but few are offering. The abundance of grass is inducing farmers to hold until after shearing. i A line of shorn fat wethers was sold at □ls.

Local butchers are drawing most of their supplies of fat stock from Burnside as little is offering locally although the inquiry is good. 1 J

Theie has been very little business In store stock for prompt delivery. There is a fair inquiry for cows in profit, but the offerings have been small. Young p*gs which have been in demand for some time have fallen several shillings in price this week as the supplies have considerably increased.
