AN UNDISCHARGED BANKRUPT
AUCKLAND, August 22.
Tekata Thompson, said to be the son of a Maori chieftain of high rank, was sentenced by Mr Justice Herdman to six months’ imprisonment for having incurred liabilities of over £2O, without disclosing the. fact that he was an undischarged bankrupt. His Honor said he had received reports from the official asignee and the probation officer. The accused was a halfcaste, and possibly was not so familiar .with the law as white men, but he must have known that he was acting dishonestly. He had been bankrupt twice. Before his first failure he was engaged in land deals, and it was reported that some of these were of a decidedly shady nature. The accused had alleged that his bankruptcy was due to loans which were not repaid, but the assignee, after investigation, had decided not to admit these claims.
