RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION.

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE.

A meeting of the executive of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association was held on Tuesday evening. Mr A. C. Lang presided. The committee submitted a report on the question of unemployment and Poppy Dav. It was recommended that the sum of £5O be granted to Oamaru to be administered by the Oamaru Returned Soldiers’ Association and the Patriotic Society’s joint committee. The unemployment had been reduced, temporary work having been found for 58 men. —The report was approved. The Town Clerk advised that the Tramways Committee had decided that passes for use on the City Corporation buses would be granted to disabled soldiers in cases where the soldier was living in the district served by bus routes. —The Chairman said the reply was very satisfactory. The President referred to the recent visit of Sir Andrew Russell to Otago and Southland. He said that Sir Andrew would pay a return visit to Dunedin at a later date, when a reunion of returned soldiers would be held. The Secretary reported that the membership on July 31 was 1140, as against 1178 on July 31, 1926. —The Chairman said that although there was a noticeable difference in the figures, the membership could be considered fairly stable. —It was suggested that every member of the executive bring along a list of returned soldiers who were not members, and have these names submitted to the next meeting. If every member of the executive carried this into effect, there was no reason why the membership should not be increased. — Mr A. M'Hutchon said that the main fact was to arouse enthusiasm among all returned soldiers who were not members. Reunions, he thought, had the effect of stimulating interest in the association. — Another suggestion put forward was that a prize should be awarded to the man who secured the largest number of new members.—lt was decided that a circular be forwarded to all returned men who are not members of the association, asking them to join up. Four new were accepted, two being Honorary members.
