CHRISTCHURCH HUNT RACES. Saturday, July 30. The Christchurch Hunt Club was extremely fortunate over its annual race meeting. Following on a week of rain, the weather cleared up, and the racing was got off in very pleasant conditions, with the sun in evidence during most of the afternoon. The Hunt meeting serves annually as an interesting preliminary to the Grand National fixture, and the excellent sport which was provided on this occasion was closely followed by a large crowd of enthusiasts. The form on the whple should be worth following. Seven Grand National candidates were included in the field for ' the Homeby Steeplechase. Maunga was always well placed, and his jumping throughout could not have been improved on. I cannot recall a finer exhibition by a novice over the Riccarton fences. Peter Maxwell ran a sound race, and Charlatan did wonderfully well after losing ground through getting too close to the first fence. These two should race prominently in the Grand National, but Maunga is a great stayer, and he has only to repeat this form again to defeat easily the Homeby Steeplechase field. Vice-Grand is a non-stayer, while

Frenchman and Pamplona can be written off on this form. There was a strong contingent of Winter Cup horses in the Brabazon Handicap. Magna Charta amply justified his favouritism by helping the pacemaking from the start and winning decisively. It was a popular win, as he was making his initial appearance for Mr Ebb Hay, a popular resident of Banks Peninsula, whose colours were unfurled for the first time. Magna Charta will now be in greater favour than ever for the Winter Cup. He looks certain to race well, but it should be borne in mind that in this race he had a lucky draw at the barrier, a great help in a big field. At the same time, it has to be admitted he is a good galloper, who will win more races, though it is a pity he is troublesome at the barrier. Sol ferite was stopping at the finish, and Hathor was beaten before going six furlongs. Chiekwheat got off badly, and his performance in finishing close behind the placed horses was impressive. Bonena won the Longbeach Hurdles in good style and was staying on well.. He easily beat four other Grand National hurdle candidates, who can have little chance of reversing places. The Dunedin owner, Mr J. M. Samson, won the Maiden Stakes with Wreath of Myrtle, a two-year-old who shapes like being very useful. There was a great finish for the Flying Hack Handicap run in a failing light and won in the last stride by Beaming, but Kalos, who was second, ran a wonderful race after being squeezed back at the start. The three winning hunters —The Babe, Pater Marion, and Gay Jim, are worth keeping in mind. The totalisator investments were £13,238, compared with £15,813 10s last year. The following are tho results: — KENNELS HURDLE HANDICAP, Of lOOsovs. Once round and a distance. 4 —Mr A. G. Macdonald’s b g The Babe, by Cronstadt —Sairlie, 6yrs, 9.12 (A. E. Ellis) 1 6—Miss L. At the mile post Lord Leslie was just showing clear of the other four, with Luthy and Rangiawhio some distance away. Two furlongs further on Lord Leslie had Calluna and The Babe in close attendance.
