Between two and three thousand grass grubs have been collected in one day from the Selwyn Plantation Board's tree-plant-ing reserve at Darfield, according to a report presented by the superintendent (Mr R. G. Robinson) to the meeting of the board last week. Mr Robinson stated that tho grub infested the area for about two years in every five or six. and it did the greatest damage in the summer by circling and ring-barking two-year-old trees. In this manner, added the superintendent. half a million young trees had been destroyed in a nursery at Tapanui. It falls to the lot of few men, if we except crowned heads, to receive the honour of a commemorative stamp issue during their lifetime. Such distinction has been conferred on Colonel Lindbergh by the Government of the United States. From the cliffs of the Waingongoro recently a large whale was seen, not a great distance from shore, disporting itself and rising ever and anon to blow (remarks a northern exchange}. It was in the vicinity for some hours.
