ADDINGTON MARKETS. CHRISTCHRCH July 20. The entries were on the light side to-day in practically all sections of stock, and there was a very firm sale throughout. Ewe hoggets in the store pens showed a sharp advance. Fat cattle met with the best market of the season. Vealers sold at a substantial rise, and fat sheep were a shade better. There was a small entry of store sheep, and a firm sale for ewes with wethers at recent values. Crossbred wether hoggets made 16s 5d to 17s 6d, crossbred ewe hoggets 23s to 275, fine-woolled ewe hoggets 27s to 295, mixed sex hoggets 23s 6d, four, six, and eight-toothed crossbred ewes 29s 7d to 31s 6d, aged halfbred ewes 18s 3d, aged crossbred ewes 16s to 21s, low-con-ditioned aged ewes Ils 6d to 14s, four, six, and eight-toothed halfbred wethers 25s 5d to 275. A few fat hoggets sold at good prices, the best making up to 33s lOd. Fat sheep were in average supply, with an irregular sale, but on an average, good sheep were better by about Is to Is 6d a head. Tighter sorts were a shade firmer than last week. Extra prime wethers brought 42s to 50s lOd, prime wethers 36s to 41s, medium wethers 30s to 355, light wethers 26s 6d to 29s 6d, extra prime ewes to 39s lOd, prime ewes 29s 6d to 33s 6d, medium ewes 24s to 295, light ewes 19s 6d to 235, aged ewes 17s to 19s.

A small entry of otO head of fat cattle was forward, including lines from Southland, South Otago, and South Canterbury. An average advance of 30s to 35s per head was recorded on prime medium-weight cattle, and from 15s to 25s on medium quality to heavy sorts. The best heifer beef made 42s per 1001 b, good prime beef 36s 6d to 395, medium-weight 33s to 355, heavyweight 33s to 365, inferior brought 3’os down to 255, extra heavy prime bullocks to £2O 2s 6d, prime heavy steers £l6 to £lB 10s. prime medium-weight steers £l3 10s to £l5, light steers £lO to £l3, rough steers £6 to £9 10s, extra prime heifers to £l4 17s 6d, prime heifers £lO 5s to £l2 10s, medium heifers £8 to £9 15s, light heifers £5 5s to £7 10s, extra prime cows to £l5 7s 6d, prime cows £9 15s to £ll 10s, medium cows £5 15s to £9 10s, aged cows £4 10s to £5 10s. Vealers’ values were up about 20s a head, the entry being a small one. Twelve to IS-months calves made to £7 15s; vealers, £3 15s to £6 15s; others, 15s to 37s fid.

Dairy cows found an easier market. Extra good second to fourth calvers realised £l2 10s; others, £4 10s to £9 10s; springing heifers, £3 15s to £7 10s; old cows, £2 10s to £3 10s.

Store cattle were in short supply, comprising mostly cows, with a couple of lines of steers from the Kaikoura district. A good sale resulted, grazers operating freely for forward sorts. Two and three-year-old steers made £0 12s fid to £7 12s 6d; ordinary to good cows, £2 5s to £4 8s 6d; bulls, £4 to £G.

The enilry of fat pigs was small, especially baconers, and most of those forward were too heavy for the trade. Porkers sold firmly. Choppers made £3 3s 6d to £8 Is; baconers, £3 Cs to £4 12s. The average price per lb was Cd to 64d. Heavy baconers made 4Jd to 54d per lb. Porkers realised 45s to 58s Cd,“the average price per lb being 7d to Bd. The entry of store pigs consisted mostly of small stores and weaners, for which the market was firm. Although values were slightly lower, weaners made 12s to 19s: slips, 20s to 265; stores, 27s to 41s; and extra large stores to 58s. OAMARU MARKETS. , , OAMARU, July 22. Another seasonal week has been experienced by the Oauiaru merchants. Everything in the line of grain has been quiet, and very few transactions are reported. A few small parcels of wheat have come in, and the market for this cereal is verv firm. Tuscan has sold at 6s to 6s 2d per bushel on trucks, and Hunters at 6s 6d. Fowl wheat is hardening, and 6s 4d per bushel, f.0.b., s.i., is now being paid. There is still no movement in the oat market. Farmers are unwilling to sell at the ruling price, and much of last reason's crop remains in the stack The nominal value of A Gartons on trucks is from 2s 8d to 2s 9d per bushel. Oaten sheaf chaff is not offering in large quantities, though small parcels have been sold at £3 10s per ton net, on trucks. No transactions in Chevalier barley are reported, but Cape barley has sold at 2s 9<l per bushel on trucks. The potato market has shown a tendency to weaken, as orders from the north are small, and there is a fairly large quantity in the pits in South Canterbury. There is not much change in the live stock market, though the prices of fats have hardened in sympathy with the Addington and Burnside markets. The opinion of local dealers, however, is that this week’s prices arc not likely to be maintained. There is an undoubted shortage of fat bullocks, and this has resulted in a firming of prices. Ox beef is now selling at as high as 40s per 1001 b, heifer beef 37s 6d, and cow beef 255. Store two-year-old steers have sold at £5 3s. Dairy cows coming to profit are instrong request, and at a clearing sale this week as high as £ll 5s was paid for cows showing quality. Very few fat wethers are offering locally. There is a keen inquiry for good ewe hoggets, but farmers are not disposed to self/ At a clearing sale, wether lambs brought 22s 6d. ewe lambs 28s 6d and sound-mouthed ewes 325. Gd. Pigs continue to be in good demand, and anything that shows quality finds a ready market. SOUTHLAND MARKET REPORT. INVERCARGILL. July 22. GRAIN.

Oats.—During the last week or ten days the market has been almost lifeless, but with the near approach of further possibility of shipment to Australia the last few days have brought forward a number of inquiries, and one or two sales have already taken place, both fer shipment to Australia and northern ports. To Victoria and New South Wales sales of A grade oats have been mide both on grade and on sample at 3s 6c per bushel, bA.j while undergrades Lavs found buyers at from 2s lOd to 3s -d, the price depending on quality. Duns, as well as

Gartons, are in strong demand, and these are saleable at up to 3s 8d for good sound ordinary lines, and 3s lOd to 4s Id for machined in the ease of the former and well-dressed lines in the ca e of the latter. Prime black oats have been sold at 3s 2d per bushel, f.0.b., s.i. Generally, merchants’ stocks are low, as also are offerings at present from the country. A glance round these districts shows no abnormal Quantity in stack, but with the advent of spring doubtless a ."air amount of threshing will take place, as the quantity in stack cannot be all used for chaff unless some export demand should arise. Chaff.—Little interest is shown by merchants, the only outlet 1 ir.g the small local demand. Prices to growers do not exceed £3 10s per ton on trucks near sidings for prime quality, sacks supplied by buyers. Ryegrass.—This market is still in a strong condition. Virtually no sales, are bei’ g made, and the only inquiries coming forward are for lines with a germination of 85 per cent, and over. Such lots are so few and far between as to be almost negligible. It is expected that a demand will arise shortly, as northern merchants will have to lay in stocks for spring seeding. Crested dogstail: This market, ia the meantime, has a somewhat downward tendency, despite the fact that sales, although quantities are small, are still being made to England at prices equalling Is 2d to Is 3d per lb, fo.b. Any sales made, however, have been confined to particularly prime lots. Ordinary good-machined dressed seed, with a germination exceeding 90 per cent., between merchants range from Is lid to Is 21d per lb. STOCK REPORT. The stock market continues firm, with little change in prices to report except a slight advance in fat sheep. The yarding at Wallacetown sale on Tuesday’ was smaller than for some time past, and although the quality was hardly up to the previous sale values rose from 2s to 3s per head. The yarding of fat cattle was larger than for the last sale or two, and prices were slightly easier. Store sheep are selling well with a keen inquiry for all classes. Store cattle are also selling well, with good demand from the north.
