SPORT AT TOKAANU.
-FISH IN GOOD CONDITION. AUCKLAND, May 10. Anglers at Tokaanu are enjoying very good sport at the present time, as plenty of fish are running up from Lake Taupo, and are rising freely to the fly. The fish are not quite up to the average of last year in weight, but they are still in good sizes, and many 10-pounders are being taken. Owing to the increasing numbers of anglers, it is very necessary that the Government should bring in a regulation declaring the river a fly stream. At present visitors from overseas frequently find their sport spoiled by a number of people using a spoon on the river. The log pool at Tokaanu maintains its reputation as being one of the best pieces of fishing waters in the world, and the number of fish taken from it this season must run into thousands. The visitor from Great Britain who pays double the license fee of a local resident is usually an expert in fly fishing, and it is obviously very unfair to him for his fishing to be spoiled by the use of the spoon. The consensus of opinion among visitors is that the stretch from the mouth of Lake Taupo to Tongariro bridge should be strictly reserved for the fly. In spite of criticism, the Tongariro River to-day is still one of the world’s greatest fishing streams.
