OTAGO CHESS CLUB.
The monthly meeting of the Otago Chess Club was attended by Mr L. D. Grigg (chairman), the Rev. Dr Merrington. Dr G. Barnett, Messrs 0. Balk, W. G. Stenhouse, L. Cohen, J. S. M. Lawson, D. Harris Hastings, and G. D. Wright (hon. secretary). The following Match Committee was set up for the ensuing season:—Messrs L. D. Grigg (vice-president), L. Cohen, and W. G. Stenhouse. It was decided that the following competitions be held :—Senior championship, junior championship, and handicap tournament. It was decided that in the senior and junior championships players must play 50 per cent, of their games, otherwise they will not count.
A discussion arose who was eligible to compete _ in the senior championship.—lt was decided that only local players who had won the junior championship would be eligible; but in the event of a member joining from another club and who wished to enter for the senior championship, this would be decided by the committee. It was decided to enter for the interclub telegraphic championship contest, and the opinion was expressed that as the senior members were taking more interest in the club, the prospects of securing the trophy for Otago looked more hopeful.
Now that the club had secured rooms of its own more interest would be taken by members, and the season 1927-28 promises to bo a successful one.
