Dr Maclean has succeeded Dr Shore as assistant to Dr Crawshaw, medical officer of health for Otago and Southland. Mr Angus MTvor left Dunedin last week en route to England and Scotland. Our London correspondent, writing on April 6, says that recent callers at the High Commissioner’s Office were:—Miss Eleanor Joachim, Mr R. R. Nimmo (Dunedin), Miss J. Ewart, and Mrs R. B. Caws (Invercargill). Mr A. M'Lennan, manager of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand, left for the north on Tuesday morning on a holiday trip. He is being relieved by Mr C. A. Thompson, the accountant. At the annual meeting of the Southland Electric Power Board on Tuesday Mr W. Hinchey, one of the Southland County representatives, was elected chairman of the board in succession to Mr A. W. Rodger. At the same time the chairman’s allowance was increased to £3OO. At the secondary school assistants’ conference on Wednesday (reports our special correspondent in Wellington) the election of office-bearers resulted as follows:— President, Miss C. Sage (Wellington); vice-president and treasurer, Air F. Alartyn Renner (Wellington) ; hon. auditor, Air W. Alexander (Hamilton); executive —North Island, Miss B.- Battersby (Epsom) and Air H. E. G. Smith (Whangarei) ; South Island, Air W. Al. Stewart (Christchurch) and Air W. Al. Utley (Christchurch) ; resident executive —Aliss R. Al. Collins (Wellington) and Air A. S. Farquhar (Wellington) .’ Appointments made recently by the Otago Education Board include the following:—Air R. A. Stenhouse, first assistant, Musselburgh; Aliss Alildred Botting. sole teacher, Tawanui; Miss E. AL Mills, sole teacher, Alerino Downs; Aliss Al. ATGovern, assistant, Owaka. Air R. A. Kenner, who, for seven years, has been general secretary of the Christchurch Y.M.C.A., has resigned in order to join the literary staff of the Auckland Stai with which he was formerly associated. Mr A. J. M’Eldowney. general secretary of the Wanganui Association, has been appointed to succeed Mr Kenner, who will leave Christchurch at the end of June. Sir Joseph Hood, a British politician, and at one time deputy-chairman of the British American Tobacco Company, arrived in Auckland last week on a world tour. Sir Joseph retired from his position with the British American Tobacco Company four years ago. The company is, perhaps, the biggest combine in the world, having a capital of £30,000,000. Its business is carried on in every part of the world, and it manufactures .1000 different brands of cigarettes. Up till a couple of years ago Sir Joseph Hood was Conservative ALP. for Wimbledon. He has seen three Parliaments, for he was in the House when Alessrs Lloyd George, Bonar Law, and Ramsay AlacDonald were Prime Alinisters.

Air 11. L. Benjamin, of Alessrs" Vickerinan and Lancaster, has been appointed permanent engineer to the Hawke’s Bay Power Board.

Air Justice Stringer will arrive in Dunedin on Thursday next. He will stay at the Grand Hotel. Dr J .P. D. Leahy. C.8.E., M. 8., M. Burg.. I). Ph,, has been appointed a member of the Medical Council under the Medical Practitioners Act, 1914.

Captain D. Todd, of the Union Steam Ship Company’s service, left Dunedin on Thursday morning for Sydney on holiday leave.

The award of the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers’ Decoration has been conferred on Major L. S. Ashton. Taranaki Regiment, and the Rev. J. Chisholm, New Zealand Chaplains’ Department. Advice has been received that the Rev. J. Douglas Smith, of Alanaia. has accepted the call to the Kaikorai Presbyterian Church. The induction will take place on June 2. Mr A. W. Alowlem, S.AI.. has been appointed to succeed Mr R. "W. Dyer, S.M., who is retiring on superannuation, as magistrate for the Napier and Central Hawke’s Bay districts.

Air Alex. Kilgour. well known in Otago as a judge of bagpipe music, arrived in Dunedin last week from Sydney on a visit to his parents. Onr special correspondent in Wellington reports that Lieut.-colonel G. R. Alitchell, D. 5.0., sth New* Zealand Mounted Rifles (Otago Hussars), has relinquished command of the regiment, and has been succeeded by Alajor F. Waite, D.S.O. The Hospital Board has appointed Dr J. Campbell Al’Kgnzie, of Waiuku, medical superintendent of the Timaru Hospital. There were 24 applications. Aliss Aliriam V. Smyth. L.T.C.L.. pupil of the Barth Pianoforte Schoo# of Alusic, has gained the New Zealand medal. 1926. This medal is awarded annually to the candidate gaining the highest position among the licentiates of the year at the diploma examinations held throughout New Zealand.

The Rev. A. B. Pywell, vicar of Alvie, Victoria, has been appointed pastor of the parish of Dunstan. His duties will begin at the end of next month.

Air I. L. Hjorring. of Oamaru, was yesterday admitted by Air Justice Reed as a barrister and solicitor <jf the Supreme Court of New Zealand.

The jubilee of Gisborne now being celebrated has disclosed some coincidences, one of which relates to the mayoralty. Of the 12 mayors who held office between 1877 and 1913 only three now remain—Messrs C. A. de Lautour. W. D. Lysnar, and J. R. Kirk—and all are lawyers. Alessrs de Lautour and Kirk had each previously been Alayor of Naseby. The combined staffs of the postal and money order branches at the local post office gathered yesterday for the purpose of bidding farewell to Mr A. W. Morris, accountant, who has been transferred on promotion to the' position of accountant at Dunedin (states our Wanganui correspondent). Air 11. O. Al. Bree (chief postmaster) congratulated Kir Morris on his promotion, and expressed the regret of the staff at the necessity of losing an officer for whom they had the greatest respect. On behalf of the staff. Mr Bree asked Mr Morris to accept a travelling rug, assuring the recipient of the kind and warm wishes that accompanied the gift. Air Frank Armstrong was a passenger on Saturday’s express for the north. He is a delegate to the Dental Conference in Wellington.
