ASSAULT ON SEAMAN.

AUCKLAND, March' 11. At the Police Court to-day, William Robert Alexander, a seaman on the cable steamer Iris, admitted assaulting a seaman off the Kaikorai named Frederick William Smith. The complainant alleged that he was attacked when escorting a young woman home from a party. He suffered a broken nose, concussion, and bruises to his body, with the result that he was in hospital several days. The accused said that he mistook the complainant for another man, whom he alleged had taken his girl to a party. He was fined £lO and costs, with the alternative of one month’s imprisonment.
