“The continued dry weather is having deleterious" effects on the roads throughout Canterbury, the principal highways in particular showing signs of crumbling under the heavy summer traffic (reports the Timaru Herald). A good rain, although it would retard harvest operations,' would have a beneficial effect on the roads and incidentally would save the County Council a good “many pounds. One stretch of road which shows no sign of crumbling is that between the show ground and the racecourse. the shingle which forms the surface being much too large to yield to ordinary pressure.
