CANTERBURY DOINGS.

By Observer. Riccarton has been very quiet during the. past week, in spite of the fact that the trainers were getting ready for last Saturday’s race meeting. With so many horses only returning early in the week from Wingatui, and requiring a' brief respite after their racing and travelling, there were not many horses to gallop fast, and those not representing the best local class. Nominations closed on .Friday for the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting, to be held at Motukarara on Saturday, March 5. They are up to the average, giving promise of fair-sized fields for the galloping events and an abundance of competitors for the trotting events. Glentruin did not return to Riccarton after racing at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting, her owner having decided to retire her to the stud. During her racing career she won £10,322 in stakes. J, Beale is on crutches, as a result of his fall while riding Rapier in the Dunedin Cup. He hopes to be fit to resume race riding before Easter. Count Cavour is home from Wingatui, where he raced disappointingly. There was some talk of spelling him, but he is being kept going with a view to autumn engagements. Rapier looks none the worse for his trip to Wingatui. He is being kept to useful tasks, and he should be seen to advantage again before the close of the season. - Centrepiece has been on the easy list during the past week, being under treatment for an abscess, but he will soon be in work again, in preparation for racing in the autumn. F. D. Jones has recommissioned the two-year-old filly Love in the Mist, by Martian from Love-a-Duck. The youngster looks well after a few weeks’ rest. The two-year-old Jericho has been enjoying a spell since he returned home after winning the Dunedin Champagne Stakes. - He may make a trip to TrenIham next month for the North Island Challenge Stakes, in which his stamina should assist him.

Happy Days has joined J. W. Jennings’s stable. He will be raced on the flat in the meantime, but later on he will be got ready for a campaign over hurdles during the winter. _Two yearlings owned by Mr H. A. Knight, are being handled by F. D. Jones. They are geldings by Rosendale from Medley (dam of Ballymena and Limerick) and by Orby’s Pride from the Gluten mare Comely. The Canterbury Jockey Club was favoured with fine weather for the summer meeting, though a cold breeze s rang up the afternoon. The attendance was about up to the average for this fixture, but, as usual, it was a local crowd, there being very few visiting sportsmen present. Good fields contested most of the events, and there was some very interesting sport. Mr G. D. Greenwood had a field day. winning races with Haze, Agrion, and Shalimar, while two other winners, Nincompoop and Ophir, were forme'r members of his team.

The racing opened with the Hornby Handicap, for which the five acceptors went to the post. Jolly Glad was a little better backed than Tiff, with strong support for Sayonara. ■ After Waterlow had led for two furlongs, Saxette went to the front, but at the six-furlong post Jolly Glad had taken charge. A furlong further on Jolly Glad was three lengths clear of Tiff and Saxette. Racing roundthe turn Tiff moved up, and he was just behind Jolly Glad at the entrance to the straight, where Waterlow also moved up. Sayonara joined in at the distance, but Jolly Glad was always going comfortably, and he k-at Sayonara by a neck. Waterlow was helf a length away, with Tiff two lengths further back. The winner is a useful five-year-old gelding by Gay Lad, and he stayed on well. Tiff looked on the big side, and he was well beaten a furlong from home. The scratching of Spearman and Royal Tractor left 10 starters for the 'Trial Stakes. Backers wer divided in their opinions between Haze and Calcite, the former eventually winding up just favourite. The Atom and Miss Flighty led Gourmet in the early stages, followed by Princess Mafalda, who took charge five furlongs from home, where Crossbow was also prominent. Haze moved up as they raced for the straight, where Princess Mafalda was still in front. At the distance Gourmet headed her, while Haze, Calcite, Princess Mafalda, and Sir Roy were all handy. A little further on Haze ran to the front, and, easily holding his position, he beat Sir Roy by a length and a-half. Calcite was two lengths away third, while three lengths further back Princess Mafalda headed the next bunch. Haze Avon very decisively. His success did not come out <of turn, as he is five years old, and this was his first win, though he has a number .of second performances in good company to his credit. Calcite lost her chance through being chopped out at the start.

Silver Coot was the only scratching for ""*' the Middle Park Plate, for which the Agrion-Autobiography bracket was backed to a very short price. Autobiography was the first to shoAV out, folloAved by Ark Royal and Paperchase. They raced like ■ this till the course proper was reached, Avnere Paperchase Avas beaten, while Autobiography retired at the distance. Agrion then ran to the front, and he won very easily by three lengths from Royal Tractor, Avhd beat Green Cloth by two lengths, with Ark . Royal three 'lengths further back. The winner’s performance was im-

Assurance, and Gay Queen. The performance of Footfall was that of a good class horse. He has not finished his improvement. Battlement was staying on Avell, and he will do eA’en better over a longer journey.

The 12 acceptors lined up for the Lyttelton Plate. Broadmoor was a hot favourite, while Reelcless Avas a long Avay better backed than Money Mart, who was third fancy. The colours of Reckless, Shalimar, Solgele, Money Mart, and Amor were prominent early, and on reaching the course proper Reckless was showing the way with Shalimar, Money Mart, and Broadmoor in the next bunch. Shalimar gradually Avore Reckless down, and won in the last couple of strides by a neck. Broadmoor Avas three lengths away, while Bolero was two lengths further back, with Money Mart, Arikiwi. and Scoff next. The Avinner, Avho is by Sutala from Adour, the dam of Soli form and Ophir, is a smart galloper whose ability had not been disclosed previously, and she stayed on well. Reckless shoAved speed, and may win before long. Broadmoor appeared to have every chance, and in the meantime he is not a good one.

pressive, and lie is going to play a leading part among the two-year-olds in the autumn. Royal Tractor added to his reputation as a speedy hack by the manner in which he beat all the others. Ophir was withdrawn from the Midsummer Handicap, leaving a field of seven. In a great betting race, Footfall just headed Fresco for favouritism. When the field settled down, Gay Queen was showing the way to Margaret Birney and Footfall, but at the end of two furlongs Footfall and Assurance both headed Margaret Birney. When half the journey had been covered, Assurance joined. Gay Queen in the lead, with Footfall and Margaret Birney next, while Battlement -was also handy, with Front Rank commencing to move up. The field was jn close order at the, entrance to the straight, but when the disanee was reached Footfall shot to the front, and the race was all over, as he went on to win easily by two lengths. Battlement, finishing strongly, got up to beat Front Rank by a head for second place, with Margaret Birney a neck away fourth, just in front of Fresco, A field of seven took part in the Craven Plate. Countersign was a hot favourite, but she was never in a position to give her backers a good run, as she lost a stirrup soon after the start, and this settled her chance. Finora led out from Nine of Spades and Nincompoop, while at the end of three furl :g Scrip moved up alongside Nine of Spades, with Finora three lengths out in front. Finora was still in charge at the home turn, with Nine of Spades, Young Lochinvar, and Nincompoop hand}. Nincompoop ran to the .front at the distance and won easily by over two lengths from Young Lochinvar, who beat Finora by a head. A length further back came Countersign, who finished on well after tailing off in. the early stages. Nincompoop stayed on solidly, and won like a good horse. He was lucky, however, to miss the real opposition of Countersign, who would probably have won but for the mishap to her gear-, as she tailed off for the first half mile.

Scratchings were numerous for the Halswell Handicap, seven withdrawals leaving a field of 10.’ Gold Mint -went out a strong favourite. Happy Queen, Precious, Serotina, and Gold Mint were the early leaders. On reaching the course proper Precious and Gold Mint were showing the way to Serotina, but a little further on Precious dropped out.' Serotina headed Gold Mint inside the distance, and though Gold Mint finished on well, Serotina lasted long enough to e t him by a head. Master Clarence, who came with a late run, was a length and a-half away, with Precious two lengths further back. Serotina broke a long succession of failures. She appears to be impr ving ir stamina, and she may win again before the end of the season. Gold Mint had every chance, and he appears to be not quite so good as his admirers thought he was. Tiff and Jarretierre were withdrawn from the Post Handicap, and in a field of nine Ophir was a little better fancied than Thorndale. There was some delay at the start, Nincompoop being one of the offenders. Will Oakland led. Gold Brick and Margaret Birney along the back, with Alyson next. There was not much chinge till the straight was reached, where Thorndale and Ophir put in an appearance. They drew clear of the field at the distance, and Ophir, finishing a trifle the better of the pair, beat Thorndale' by a neck, was two lengths away, with Alyson fourth. Ophir is a slow beginner, but, like Thorndale, he has a fine finishing run, and a stone advantage in the weights was the deciding factor. Things are quiet on the local trotting tracks at present. Several of our trainers are in Auckland, assisting at the Otahuhu Trotting Club’s meeting, while many of the horses who have been racing recently are on the easy list. They will soon be busy again, however, in preparation for the Brighton Trotting Club’s fixture, to be held at Addington next month during the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York. It has attracted very large nominations, and it looks like being a big success. It is reported that the well-known trotting trainer P. Riddle is trying to dispose of his property, with a view to returning to Australia. D. Bennett has made another start on the --trotter Audominion, who looks remarkably well after his holiday. The trotter Peter M’Kinney has done well lately. P. Riddle has given this fast but unsound horse a lot of attention, and though he was unlucky to be beaten in his most recent race, he may be a winner before long. Napland does not seem to have come back to his best form since lie resumed work. He trots in finished style, and his manners are perfect, but his speed is absent. The pacer Homer is not working at her best at present. Though she looks well, she is inclined to mix her gait, and she does not pace with confidence. Todd Bingen continues to show good form on the track, and he only has to reproduce his best to win a race very soon.

Harold Burwood has resumed work after a short spell. He is a hard horse to get to his best form, and. he will find it difficult to succeed from his present mark. The sister to Sheik is one of P. Riddle’s active division. She is a compact,*wellbuilt mare, who is being worked at the trotting gait, but she is being confined to slow jogging in the meantime. Master Ando is trotting well in his work. He is a greatly improved horse so far as stamina is concerned. The big trotter Nellie Hugo continues •to train on the right way. She has a very easy action, and is particularly clean gaited. A. Cox has a very high opinion of her ability to develop into a high-class performer. The Harold Dillon pacer Avenger has improved a ■ good deal this season, and as he has not been unduly hurried he should still do better. He looks, in fact, like developing ’into a high-class horse over two miles. Prince Pointer is still enjoying a spell, and he will not be put into work again for some time. Loganwood has been racing well lately, and it has done him a lot of good. He gets through his work at New Brighton in great style, - and he may win again before the end of the season. Daytime has not done much racing this season, but he is in regular work, and he bears a well-trained appearance. He is a very promising young pacer.

Charley Bingen, who is a son of Great Bingen, is now a member of R. E. Mills’s team. He did not prove a success as a pacer, and now he is being worked as a trotter. He seems more contented than when working with the hopples, and he may develop into a useful sort. Escape, who raced so well at Addington against the pacers, looks in the best ot health, and she may "do even better before the end of the season, in spite of the fact that she has reached a very tight mark. Her recent racing should be of great benefit to her. She is a contented mare, who appears to have thrived on travelling and racimr. Hie Brent Locanda. gelding Tahoe has gone to G. F. Robinson’s stable at New Brighton. <

The trotter Tamerlane is in steadv work at New Brighton. He has improved

a good deal lately, and is now more than useful. Kotuku Jack has come on well lately. He has built up a lot, and there seems a prospect that this brother to Prince Pointer will develop into a really good horse over two miles.

WELLINGTON NOTES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) February 16. • Listening Post and Corn Rigs have been nominated for the Nelsdn Jockey Club’s fixture. For the first time this year the meeting extends over three days. This year the Wellington autumn meeting will be held on St. Patrick’s Day and March 19, instead of after Easter, as in previous years. It is not expected, with Commendation still in the Dominion, that there will be a large field in the New Zealand St. Leger. The Hawk retains his form in a wonderful manner. He won in the handicap class at Ellerslie, and beat his opponents in the Taranaki Stakes last Saturday. He is engaged in the Wanganui Jaokson Stakes this week. The Metropolitan Handicap winner Piuthair was successful in both _ the Egmont and Taranaki Cups. She is a half-sister to Novar, the Manawatu Cup winner, and Clarinda, who has been a useful performer in the colours of Mr R. A. M’Kenzie. Two of the useful Bisogne tribe. Benzora and Orazone, who showed up prominently at the Wellington meeting, were successful at both the Taranaki and Egmont meetings. Taketake fell in the hurdles on the first day at Taranaki, and his rider, F. Towler, sustained injuries that proved fatal. Towler won on Taketake at Egmont the previous week. Silvermine is not so good as his dam, who was a great galloper. The two-year-old acted as runner-up in the Wellington and Taranaki Stakes. Although the totalisator turnover at the Foxton Racing Club’s annual meeting showed a falling off of over £7OOO, the club came out with a fairly decent balance. The racing on the first day at Wanganui was of a high order, and the cup resulted in Piuthair winning by a head from Rapine, with Mr R. A. M’Kenzie’s other representative in third place. Rapine ran a wonderful race, and only for being closed in during the early stages, would have scored. Piuthair has now won in succession the Egmont, Taranaki, and. Wanganui Cups. The unplaced division was led by Novar, Nukumai, and Oha. Ngata was well back in seventh place, followed by Te Monanui and Mint Leaf. In the Flying Handicap Civility registered a brilliant performance, and in a fine finish just got home from Benzora, who just beat The Hawk. The favourite, Shirley, was fourth, closely attended by Oration, Deluge, and Tukia. The Hawk (after getting left) ran a great race, and is sure to be hard to beat in the Jackson Stakes on Saturday.

AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By Digger. The speedy Antrim Boy has had another change of trainers, and is now a member of W. Donaldson’s team at Whangarei. Slump is being regularly schooled. He was giving a good display over six hurdles on ■ Thursday when he hit the last and came down. He cut his hind leg, but the injury is not likely to be serious. W. Patterson’s pair of jumpers, Uralla and Royal Form, are in .good order at present, and their prospects in hurdle races at coming country fixtures look very bright. . The racing which Archibald was allotted at the A.R.C. summer.meeting has worked a big improvement in the Archiegtown gelding’s condition, and he may now be a good one to follow in jumping races, especially as the class in commission at present is not good. The promising hack Abbess has not been produced since she won her . maiden victory at Taumarunui. A minor ailment has' caused her withdrawal from recent but she may be again seen to the fore at Te Aroha. Nothing of outstanding ability looks like coming to light among the local juveniles. Of those who raced at Takapuna In The Shade is the likeliest to make progress, and it will be surprising if he fails to extend his record at Te Aroha. Several useful hacks have been unearthed on the country circuit, but so far none has claims to greatness. If Paddon is landed at the post at his best at Te Aroha, he should be able to concede weight to anj’ of this season’s finds. Newbury is a delicate but brilliant galloper. He requires firm conditions, which he may get at Te Aroha. His ability to go fast from the barrier will be a great asset in big fields at the week-end. One of the. unlucky division at Rotorua was Dobbin. The Matamata hack is at present a very fit horse, and he will repay watching in coming short distance events, either in the hack or open class. Although looking a picture at Rotorua Sevang failed, principally owing to being badly ridden. If J. Buchanan puts a prominent rider on the chestnut at _Te Aroha he is likely to be very solidly supported. ■ . Too much notice need not be taken of Scat’s single defeat at Rotorua. The Paeroa horse was not favoured with the best of luck, and we anticipate the Day Comet gelding making a bold bid for cup honours at Te Aroha. If there is one horse at Ellerslie that racing should improve, it is Town Guard. The" big fellow has trained on satisfactorily since the Te Kuiti meeting, and he will not. lack support next time out. Branson won twice at Rotorua, and is on" the up grade. He is no champion, but a good, solid fellow, who can carry a bit of weight in minor company. Another point in his favour is that he can stay better than the majority of hacks. Transformer’s owner . expressed the opinion prior to the Takapuna meeting that his horse would be better a few weeks hence. If that i.pinion is correct, the Thurnham gelding should now be a fit horse. If he is_better than he was at Takapuna, he will set the opposition a severe task in the Herries Memorial Cup at Te Aroha.

At his best Le Choucas is a good sprinter. The Magpie gelding is gradually coming down . in the handicaps, and he is now in a favourable position to win the first time he shows a return to His best form. It will be remembered that Aussie was voted unlucky when beaten by Aurumairs and Tea Bell on the second day at Takapuna. The three-year-old is acquiring solidity as he ages, and is quite a good sprinter. He has the physique to carry weight, so that he must be considered dangerous in approaching events up to a mile. When Awarera. won at Takapuna he lost some ground at the start, but was quickly in front, and registered a good performance. He has not appeared in the interval, but is due to make his next appearance at Te Aroha. After recording his "dual victory at Takapuna in November, Ruffles trained off slightly, and -was not seen at his best at Christmas. The Quin Abbey gelding . is well above the average, and when produced again at country fixtures will be worthy of consideration. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. ROTORUA RACES. Second Day—Monday, February 14. The second day of the Rotorua Racing Club’s meeting was favoured by fine weather/' and was well attended. The going was good. The totalisator handled £17,571, a decrease of £2602 on the meeting, compared with last year.
