ATLANTIC FLIGHT
. . ITALIAN AIRMAN. LONDON, February 14. The Marchese di Pinedo, the Italian airman, has arrived at Rio de Oro, completing 2000 miles in two stages of his flight. The Marchese di Pinedo originally intended to include Australia and New Zealand in his flight, but his plans were altered, and his route is now a triangular one to South America, San Francisco, British Columbia, and back across the Atlantic via the Azores and Lisbon. He expects to complete the whole flight of 25,000 miles in two months. February 15. The Marchese di Pinedo, flying at night in the hope of saving a day on the Atlantic crossing, left Rio de Oro at 11 o clock last night. The hydroplane passed over Cape Verde, going splendidly. The aviator expects to reach Pernambuco to-morrow. The airman arrived at Belama at 8.15, covering 1000 miles at the rate of 105 miles an hour. To-morrow he will start his flight over the Atlantic, crossings to Port Catal in Brazil. February 17. A report from Belama states that the Marchese di Pinedo was unable to depart for Pernambuco owing to engine trouble. The seaplane refused to rise, and it was towed into the harbour. A RIVAL IN THE FIELD. PARIS, February 15. A thrilling transatlantic aerial race is in prospect owing to the announcement that Major. Borges, the Uruguyuan airman, has arranged to take off from Pisa on Thursday in an attempt to fly across the Atlantic on practically the same route as di Pinedo. He will land at Perambuco and end his flight at Montevideo. Major Borges uses a Dornier seaplane equipped with two Farman 500 h.p. motors. The fact that di Pinedo was aware of Major Borges's flight explains the secrecy of his own departure.
