COAL, OIL (N.Z.) LIMITED.

Reports on the coal and oil properties owned by Coal, Oil (N.Z.) Limited have been made by two Australian mining engineers, Mr John M'Geachie, of Sydney, and Mr C. Lindsay Clark, of Melbourne. The company’s petroleum field is situated near Dannevirke on lands selected by Dr John Wanner, a German geologist, the largest wells being at Waipatiki, near the northern extremity. Mr M'Geachie says it is reasonable to assume that the source of the gas which flows from the Waipatiki well is of some magnitude, and Mr Clark says there are definite indications which are sufficient to warrant the continuation of the search for oil.

The Calliope coal properties of the company are situated 14 miles from Westport, and Mr M'Geachie describes the coal as of first-class quality, the round coal being of remarkably good appearance,, particularly at the southern or Denniston end of the field. Mr Clark states that, subject to satisfactory results of the tests for quality, a well-equipped colliery on the area would compete under favourable circumstances with adjoining or other coal mines in New Zealand.
