PROBLEM 6077. By J. A. Kerr, sen. Black on 21, King 24.

PROBLEM 6078. By “Starlight.” (From Nottinghamshire Guardian.) Black on 6, Kings 7, 23.

An interesting little exercise, and the nom de plume of the author recalls pleasing memories of Rolf Boldrcwood's famous Captain of the Bushrangers.

GAMES. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. The following pair of games were played in the preliminary rounds cf the above tourney held in Dunedin, Easter, 192 G. Game Gl66—“Edinburgh.” 9 13, 21' 20 line.

Annotated by Draughts Editor. (a) This move allows an equal game. (B) This move is weak. 22 17 is mostly favoured. Mr F. Tescheleit’s new book, “Master Play of the Draughts Board,” referring to 22 17, says: “Seems infeasible to remove Black’s weakness (piece on 13), but the man on 20 is a compensation.” The came book says 28 24 is safe, and will be popular in 4 move restriction. This also applies to 23 18, which forms into various “Ayrshire Lassie" play. (c) Taking advantage of the previous White .weak move. (n) The Black game looks invincible now.

(a) A line not often adopted, and very little play is published on it. (b) 28 24 is better, followed by 5 9, then 23 19, as played in the Gonotsky-Ginsberg poatch. (c) 27 21 is best here, but 18 14 is also hound play. (i>) M. F. Tescheleit’s “Master Play of the Draughts Board” gives the following play to draw.

(E) 1 diagram the position here, and submit the following play for a White win, which I think my friend missed. Black on 2,4, 9, 10, 13, 15, 16, 19.

"White' on 11, 17, 22, 23, 26, 28, 29, 31. White:, to . move. \

TO CORRESPONDENTS. G. E. D., Lower Harbour.—You are correct with solution of Problem 6074. G. A. 8., Christchurch.— Many thanks for games; they are welcome. J. A., Wyndham.—Your budget received; I will use as problems. J. A. 8., Waipiata.—Thanks for letter card; am pleased you found it, as otherwise a misunderstanding might have occurred. _ ~ J. 8., New Plymouth.—Letter will appear next issue. Am writing you.

DRAUGHTS IN AMERICA. STUDENTS’ SECTION. Wm. Fleming, champion of Nebraska, lias been stirring up the players of South Dakota, lately, and below I give one of the games played by him over the wire. Game 6468—“ Double Corner.” 9 14, 22 18.

(a) Jordan does not give this move. (b) Getting lined up for the shot in note “c.” (c) 27 23, 15 18, 22 15, 19 24 , 23 19, etc. F. R. Wendemuth got this shot on a Chicago player many years ago, and won the game. The position came up from a different series of moves. However, I sensed the shot and started to get ready for it at note “b.” Have forgotten Wendemuth’s continuation.

CRITICISMS. A DELAYED CORRECTION. Allan and Boreham concerned. On September 21 last we published a game (No. 6409) played between Messrs H. Egan (.Victoria) and V. Rickard (N.S.W.). Note “e” gave play to draw, taken from the Scottish Draughts Quarterly. At the 13th move of this play the position is as follows: Black on 2,3, 5,6, 14, King 15; White on 12, 13 , 20, 25, 28, 29, King 16. White to move. Mr J. Allan, Wyndham, says: White can win, and gave play to show it —viz., 28 24, 14 17, 16 19, 6 10,. 20 16, 2 7. At this point Mr J. A. Boreham says 2 7 is' wrong, as it allows a White win; play 26, and it is a fair problem; White to play and draw, thus 26, 12 8-a, 24 20, 15 24, 25 21, 12 19, 21 7; careful play, and White can draw. (a) 25 21, 17 22, 21 17, 5 9, and 1 doubt if White can find a draw. [Note.—Mr Boreham’s correction was written on a letter card when he was in Christchurch playing his match with Mr Brown. He thought he had posted it to me, and wondered why the play had not been published. However, he came across the letter card among some papers just a day or two ago. Hence the delay.—Draughts Editor, O.W.]

SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS. Problem 0073 (by J. C. Brown): Black on 3,5, King 2; White on 13, 15, 26. White to move and draw.

NOTES OF INTEREST. A meeting of the Central Executive, of the New Zealand Draughts Association was held in Mr Divers’s rooms, Princes street, on Saturday evening last, January 29. There was a good attendance of members, and the following officers were elected: President, Mr Joseph Abernethy; hon. secretary, Mr James Bsecot. Various matters in connection with the game in New Zealand were discussed, and the action of the secretary in writing to the Australian Draughts Association asking them to lift the residential qualification in favour of New Zealand players was approved. The balance sheet for the championship tourney held in Dunedin last Easter was presented and adopted. It was resolved that the New Zealand Draughts Association and the Executive record its high appreciation of Mr R. Caldow’s splendid services to the New Zealand Draughts Association extending over a very long period. A letter from Mr F. K. Kelling re tournament matters was dealt with and a reply sent.

STATEMENT OF RECEIPTS AND expenditure. Draughts championship tourney held in Dunedin, Easter, 1926: — Receipts.

DRAUGHTS LITERATURE. * A NEW PUBLICATION. We have just receiver* an advance copy from the publishers, Mesaus E. Marlborough and Coy., Ltd., London, of Mr M. F. Tescheleit’s new bock entitled “Master Play of the Draught* Board.” The author has been recognised for many years as one of our leading analysts. He has devoted many years to the task, and the book reflects very highly on his industry and skill. The author has adopted various contractions with a view to saving space, but we do not think the X to represent a series of captures will find universal favour. Part 1 is devoted to the “Edinburgh” opening, and each of the seven replies to 9 13 are dealt with at length. Part 11, which will be issued shortly, will deal with the “Double Corner,” or all the replies to 9 14. The price will be 4s 6d post free, and we will be pleased to obtain copies for anyone who wishes to get one. We have given a sample of the play and notes in our annotations of the “Edinburgh” games in this issue (see above). ILLNESS. We are sorry to have to record the illness of a number of draughts players, who are having a particularly bad spin of late. Mr M’Millan, a well-known member of the Otago Draughts Club, has been in hospital for about eight months with a bad leg. The latest report is that he is progressing favourably. . Mr J. A. Scott (ex-New Zealand champion) is in the Gore Hospital suffering with a damaged ankle, the result of an accident whilst engaged at work. Messrs J. A. Lucas and W. Tibbles are again at work and feeling comparatively fit. We, and all draughts players, sincerely hope ’ that this quartet will soon again be restored to perfect health and strength. REMOVAL. We learn that Mr L. R. Morris, the wellknown Palmerston player, has taken up his residence in Christchurch, and with the practice which he will be able to obtain there should develop into one of our strongest tourney players
