AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By Diggeb. The steeplechaser Beau Cavalier has resumed work after a lengthy spell. He has only to keep right to pay his way when the jumping season opens. Tresham, who has been spelling since he met with an injury at Takapuna in the spring, is back again with N. Cunningham’s team. He is not as bright as one would expect after his holiday. Ring the Bell, has left J. T. Jamieson’s , stable, and is how being trained by E. Pope at Ellerslie. The Hapsburg gelding is on the private sale list. J. Williamson has taken up the jumpers Pittsworth and Dimlight. Both have put on flesh during their absence from the track. N. Dickey has named the Some Boy ll—lsingarch filly Pal o’ Mine. She is not likely to be ready before next season. A. Ormrod is working a three-year-old gelding named Star Boy, by Some Boy. ll—Lady Gowan. During the week H. L. Russell returned from Sydney with Mount Marta, Seaosi, and Berinthia. Although not a successful trip, the Te Awamutu trainer won five races during his stay in , Australia.

The Quin Abbey—Lady Winsome youngster, purchased at Trentham by-N. Cunningham, received slight injuries coming up on the train. She is nearly right again, and is being exercised at Ellerslie. The English mare White Bird seems to have quite recovered from the mishap which prevented her from racing at Christmas, and she is again striding along freely in her work. Town Bank could not hit out on the second day at Takapuna, but he is all right in himself, as he sprinted well .during the week. At present there does not seem much chance of him getting a soft track for some weeks.. The Auckland contingent nominated at Wanganui are not a formidable lot. They include Eden Hall, Bimmer, Carraghmore, Ned Kelly,' Daytaro, Pouri, West Abbey, and Wenday. Dimmer and Pouri are improvers, who may do best on the trip. The_ race Serang had at Takapuna will put him just about right, and he can be expected at anytime. The Absurd sprinter is engaged at Rotorua, where his good showing at Takapuna will ensure him getting plenty of support. The Paeroa horse Scat won. the last race at Takapuna in great style. He has in the past proved himself over a middle distance, so that now he has returned to form it will not be surprising to see him record a sequence of good performances. Aussie was unlucky at Takapuna, where he put up a good effort on the tecond day. After a very bad passage, he was going fast in third place. Racing has made him solid; and he is due to .-extend his record at coming fixtures. .. After 12 months, during which he railed to show anything like his best

form, Transformer came right back at Takapuna. He was unlucky in not winning both big events, as his rider could not hold him in the middle stages of his second day race, when he ran himself right out. The Thurnham gelding is one of the few Auckland horses who can get a distance satisfactorily. Recent racing has wrought a big improvement in Pelham, who just failed to see out the seven furlongs at Takapuna. He will be better next time out, when he should be very hard to beat in a similar class. Alonsoa is an improving mare by Catmint who will be worth noting at meetings on the country circuit this year. She has not run a bad race since the summer fixtures started, and will certainly do better. Since_ her attractive victory at Taumarunui Abbess has been nominated but not started. She may make a reappearance at Rotorua, where those who witnessed her only victory are not likely to let her run unbacked. TUAPEKA JOCKEY CLUB. Second Day—Monday, January 31. Wednesday, February 2. ’ The Tapanui Racing Club’s meeting was held in warm weather before a record attendance. The track was in good order, and there were a number of close finishes. Tn the Flying Handicap, Ace of Hearts came down in the straight, N. C. Dwyer, being badly injured. He suffered concussion, and was removed to the Tapanui : Hospital. An inquiry was held into the accident, and it was decided that any interference was caused through Overhaul losing his balance at the turn after drawing clear of Quick Form, and the evidence did not point to the cause of Ace of Hearts falling, which was deemed to be probably accidental. The totalisator handled £7418, compared with £6728 last year. Results.:— TRIAL STAKES, <'• Of 60sovs. Six furlongs. Wj I—Mr J. M. Samson’s b g Credit, by 1 Paper Money—Formless, 3yrs, 8.7 (W.
