NORTH OTAGO

NEWS FROM THE DISTRICT, • A MIXED WEEK. The weather in North Otago during the past week has been “mixed,” and heavy showers of rain have fallen on two days. These have interrupted the harvesting of oats and grass seed a little, but they have freshened up rape and turnip crops, which were wilting under the influence of nor’wecters. Several paddocks of wheat have been out, and a good deal of this crop will be ready for harvesting next week. Garton oats are now being threshed from the stock, and are producing good yields. In some cases 70 bushels to the acre are being obtained. The ravages of “take all” in the wheat and barley crops have not been extended to any great extent. Lambs are now coming in freely to the local freezing works, and those coming off the rape are >n excellent condition. Stock generally are looking remarkably well. Owing to the abundance of feed, the milk supply to the dairy factories is being well maintained. Summer fallowing is still in progress on a number of farms in the district. i ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY. At a meeting of the Waitaki Acclimatisation Society, presided over by Mr L. H. Sumpter, an’ amending regulation was received from the Marine Department in re- • gard to the taking of quinnat salmon. This stated that the length of any net used must not exceed 240 ft, instead of 100 ft as previously. A communication from the Southland Society, stating that it would be in a position to supply unlimited quantities of eyed brown trout ova at 3s 6d per 1000, f.0.r., Mossburn, was held over. It was decided to stock the Kakanui River with Sockbum fry, and to order 50,000 for liberation. It was resolved to invite delegates from the Waimate society to send delegates to Oamaru to discuss matters of mutual interest.

PARADISE DUCK. The Waitaki Acclimatisation Society eeently wrote the Minister of Internal Affairs, suggesting that the season for taking paradise duck be extended beyond the period of last year—namely, one week. The department has replied that it is not considered possible to extend the season, which has been fixed from May 1 to May t. I’aradise duck are reported to be fairly numerous on the rivers and lagoons in the Upper Waitaki area. ‘ MOTOR STEED LIMITS. At a meeting of the North Otatro Motor Association a lengthy report from the Timaru Town Clerk was received through the South Island Motor Union, giving particulars of speed limits in various towns of the Dominion, and the opinion of Mr T. F. Martin, solicitor, in regard to the making and enforcing of them. Several anomalies in speed limits were mentioned,' Mr Calder remarking that the general tendency was for the adoption of a restriction to driving at a reasonable speed. It was decided to forward a remit to the. next meeting of the South Island Union advocating uniformity of by-laws in regard to speed limits.

CRICKET. Interest was centred in the match on the High School ground between Oamaru and Union, the former team having 12 points and the latter 11 in the cup competition. Scores: — OAMARU. The assertion of an ex-constable that the work of the special body of policemen who escorted the Prince of Wales throughout his Dominion tour was more in the nature of' an endurance test than a privileged trip, and the hope he expressed that better arrangements would be made in connection with the safeguarding of the Duke and Duchess of York were commented upon by the Commissioner of Police, Mr W. B. M'llveney (states the Evening Post). “All that is possible for the comfort and convenience of the men has been done on this occasion,” he remarked. ' a "l am certainly unaware of anything having been done that did not make for the comfort of those who travelled with the Prince of Wales. The staff selected on this occasion by myself prove to be younger men who are probably accustomed to ensuring more than those selected for the previous tour. Of course, I did not overlook tho fact that the grumbler is just as likely to be present on thia occasion as , formerly. It seems to be the privilege of some persons to complain where there is precious little reason for complaint.” — Over 1000 ships, of various kinds and sizes sail up and down the English Channel every 24 hour*.
