MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board was commenced on Wednesday, the following being present:—Messrs J. Wallace (chairman), .J. Horn, M.P.,.R. H. With regard to the Lowburn teacher’s application for painting and papering inside of residence and provision of bathroom, the architect reported that the provision of a bath-room seemed .necessary. This could be. done at a reasonable cost by extending the washhouse and. parti-, tioning it off. A good deal of repair work was also necessary in both school and residence and the architect recommended that all- be made satisfactory while the men were there. —Agreed to. , ' CORRESPONDENCE.

The Awamoka head teacher applied for the installation of the electrio light. Agreed to. The Waitaki Power Board, wrote suggesting that it be allowed to proceed with the installation of light at the Papakaio resi ; dence.—Suggestion agreed to. The Te Houka branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union wrote protesting against the removal df the Te Houka School residence.—Received. The chairman reported having authorised ’ the acceptance of the tender of Messrs Meiklejohn and Choak—amount £463—for the removal of the Ranfurly School residence.—Received . The head teacher at Alexandra applied for permission to lease the old. school garden. The committee offered no pbjec-. tion to the proposal.—Applicants to be asked to make an offer.,; A : The Otago Young Men’s Methodist-Bible Class Union applied for nermission to use ths Tokomairiro District High-School buildings and grounds' for, the purpose -of a camp during - the Easter vacation. on usual terms; ■ provided -the committee ■is agreeable t ’■ ■ ■; ; ■

With regard to the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York, the department advised the board to favour parades of Girl Guides and Boy Scouts so long as they. did not interfere with other local arrangements. The department also intimated, that . the Department of Internal Affairs had decided to regard the Roxburgh children as a •special case and to grant children from that district stop-over tickets from Miller’s Flat to Dunedin on condition that the Dunedin people accepted the entire responsibility for the accommodation of the children for the two or three days they would be in the city. . The Department of Internal _ Affairs wrote intimating that the royal train would stop at Ranfurly for about 10 minutes.—lt was decided that the correspondence be reMessrs D. Marshall and A. _E. Russell wrote expressing thanks for their appointment as the board’s representatives on the Balclutha High School Board.

The meeting concluded on Thursday when the following members were in attendance; Mr J. Wallace (chairman), and Messrs G Livingstone, James Smith, L. Sanderson, J. Mitchell, P. M'Kinlay, J. Horn, M.P. Accounts amounting to £21,487 lis oa were passed for -payment. - APPLICATIONS FOR SUBSIDIES. , The Owakn Committee applied for a subsidy of £4B 6s towards the cost of excavating and levelling at the. school at an estimated cost of £144 18s.—Referred to architect.- B . *’ ?i , , The Benhar Committee applied, for a subsidy of £3 towards the co?t . of • top-dressing and asphalting-at an estimated-cost of £9.— Approved. . - .;v .

ARCHITECT’S RECOMMENDATIONS. An application was received from the head teacher at Otepopo for renovating the interior of the residence. —The Architect reported that the woi’k had not been doQp since 1913, and the request was a reasonable one. —Agreed to. The Lauder Committee applied to lay down paths from the road to the residence as it was about to undertake similar work from the road to the school. —The . rchitect reported that he did not recommend any outlay as the residence was not Occupied by the teacher. As the climate was dry,' there did not appear to be a great need for the work.—Application declined. The Architect recommended interior renovation of two rooms and kitchen and the supply of three new blinds at Waiwera South.—Approved. The Architect recommended interior painting of the Blacks School. Concrete paths were also required to carry the stoves •and protect the floor. —Work approved. The Lovell’s Flat Committee applied for a lawn tennis court in the far end of the school ground.—The architect did not recommend favourably for the reason that the ground was too narrow and had a fastflowing creek running along one side. The school had at present 240 square yards of asphalted surface. Repairs were needed to the wooden wall which protected the ground on the creek side and a turnstile was needed for the entrance. —Lawn tennis court declined and other repairs approved. With regard to an application from Balolutha, the Architect recommended x that the borough water service be taken to the school to replace the tanks. —Approved. With regard to the Tahakopa .Committee’s application for asphalt, round, the school, the ' architect estimated the • cost at £llO. 'The £4O found by the committee would make available £l2O. If the . full

amount were granted. -he recomended a path from the gate in.—'Granted on the usual conditions. With regard to the Hawea Flat teacher’s application for interior renovation, the Architect reported that this was done in January, 1922, and should not now be in bad condition. —Held, over. The Cromwell' ..-Committee applied for beaver board round the. sides of the schoolroom .for demonstration . .. purposes.—> Granted. , ; ' - . . The’ Port Molypeux Committee applied for new furniture for the school. The Architect reported that second-hand forms and desks could be supplied, and he- recommended that this be done.—Approved. The Kakapuaka Committee applied for new tanks for _ the school and residence. The Architect reported that the school tank should do for some time yet. ’ The tank at the residence was done.—Tank for residence grantedschool tank declined. The Presbyterian Young Women’s Bible Class, Union applied for the use. of the Lawrence Technical School buildings for Easter camp.—Granted under usual conditions. The Teacher at Wedderburn applied for the interior renovation of the residence and various repairs,’ also for better seating accommodation in the school.—Referred to architect for report RESIGNATIONS.
