MEETING AT WANGANUI. WANGANUI, January 29. The West Coast athletic championships were opened here in glorious weather today. The meeting was notable for the presence of many stars, including R. Lamb, the Victorian cyclist, who registered spectacular performances. He praised the local cycle track warmly, stating that it was. the best he had yet seen in the Dominion, and only second to the Melbourne track. A review of the afternoon session discloses that the outstanding performance was the discus throw of 133 ft Bin" by L. Hunt (Hawera), who thus beat the New Zealand standard thrown by 3ft Bin. Hunt is of powerful physique and has a good style with the discus, but in the javelin throwing he was outclassed by Lay. his club mate, whose slight build did not prevent him from hurling the javelin 175 ft 7in.

In the running events a good perform ance was put up by H. Newton (Wanganui). who won the half mile in two minutes dead, while G. Broad (Wanganui) equalled the New Zealand record in winning the 120yds hurdles in 16sec. At the dose of the afternoon session the noints scored bv the various clubs were: — Hawera Wanganui 29. Pirates 14s. New Plymouth 26. Lamb made his first appearance in the three-mile cycle race. •. Interest centred in the meeting between him and Ross, the local champion, but the latter was out classed by Lamb’s brilliant sprint in the last lap. In the first heat of. the mile, however, he ran the Australian to a slashing finish, which was-won by Lamb by a foot.
