SOUTH AFRICAN FLAG.
A VISITOR'S OPINION. WELLINGTON, January 25. A visitor from Johannesburg who has been in touch with political events in South Africa in recent years expressed the opinion that a new national flag would wave over South Africa before very long. The sympathies of the Prime Minister (General Hertzog) were with the movement, while Dr Malon. a member of the Cabinet and formerly Minister of Education in the Botha Administration, was also a strong advocate of the proposal. Another aspect that had to be borne in mind was the promise made by General Smuts some years ago that the South Africans would have their own flag. At the time a change was made in the Rea Ensign, the South African coat of arms being displayed in one corner, but this makeshift had satisfied nobody. It was, however, the only recognised flag in use in South Africa, apart from the Union Jack. The decision had been postponed in the meantime in view of the fact that the Prime Minister wished to attend the Imperial Conference. The form of the flag, the visitor added, was not the main question. The issue was, rightly or wrongly, a new flag altogether.
