Extra prime made to 29s Id; prime 26s to 28s 6d; medium 23s 6d to 25s 9d; unfinished 21s to 235. Fat Sheep.—The entry was heavy and values were lower by Is 6d per head. Exporters bought within their schedule limits. Some exceptionally fine Southland and Chatham Island sheep were forward. Fat Cattle.—There was a slightly smaller entry, but a dull sale, there bein<r a further easing of 25s to 30s per head. Most of the serviceable beef sold from 31s to 34s per 1001 b, heavy bodies being cheaper per hundred. Extra heavy steers brought £l2 10s to £l4; prime medium-weight steers £l2 5s to £l4 7s 6d; medium steers £9 10s to £l2; light steers £7 to £9 5s • extra prime heifers' to £ll 7s 6d: prime heifers £7 to £9 15s; medium heifers £4 to £5 10s; extra prime cows to £ll 2s 6d; prime cows £6'los to £9; medium cows £5 to £6; light cows £3 15s to £4 15s. Fat Pigs.—There was a very heavy entry, including West Coast and South Otago baconers, the latter of which were too heavy for the market. OAMARU MARKETS. (From Oub Own Correspondent-) OAMARU, January 28. The market for grain in North Otago is becoming a little more active. The ->pw season’s wheat will shortly be on the market, but millers have not yet been doing any business locally. Farmers aro not disposed to accept less than 6s per bushel, • and millers are not yet offering that price. The highest price so far given for wheat for forward delivery is said to be 5s 9d per bushel. „The oat market is dead. A line of heavy Gartons has been sold ex store at 3s per bushel. Algerian oats of this season have also been sold, but the prices are not quoted. Ryegrass seed is now being dressed, and will shortly be pn the market. There is a fair demand for perennial rye, but the carry over of Western Wolths and Italian rye has made the latter a'drug on the market. A line of Chevalier barley has chan'ed hands at 3s 6d per bushel on trucks. Potatoes for local consumption are coming freely upon the market, but digging for export will not be commenced for fully six weeks. The stock market is fairly active. Forward delivery stock is now being transferred. Sales of mixed-sex lambs have been made at 20s. Sound-mouthed station ewes are quoted at 26s to 28s, and failingmouth ewes at 15s to 20s. Fat wethers are selling at 28s to 30s, and fat ewes 12s to 15s. The schedule price for lambs has not been altered, and lambs are now being turned pn to the rape. Fat bullocks are still quoted at 34s per 1001 b, heifers at 30s. and cows at from 10s to 20s, according to age. There is no demand for dairy stock, but pigs are still selling freely.

SOUTHLAND MARKETS. (From Oub Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, January 29. GRAIN. . There is really nothing fresh to report in . this market, Northern buyers are Indicating 3s> 2d to 3s 3d for “A’’ grade, f.0.b., s.i.. Bluff, and 3d less for B grade, and it is reported that some holders of oats have met the market and accepted 3s 3d for A’s and 3s for B’s. Sellers, however, are not the Invercargill merchants, who are not- prepared to quit at these prices, which must show a heavy loss to the sellers. Values to farmers on the bases of the above prices would be from 2s 4d to 2s 5d on trucks, country sidings for A’s and 3d less for B’s. Chaff.—The chaff market is, in sympathy ■with oats, very dull. The shipping demand which existed a month or two ago seems to have ceased, and the only outlet at present is for local requirements. ' Values to farmers for prime quality is £3 15s to £4

per ton. Inferior chaff is very unsaleable, . and can only bo disposed of at a sacrifice. Wheat.—At present there is no business at all being done in Southland .. wheat, as supplies for local fowl feed purposes ar,e boin- drawn from outside markets. Ther« are indications of lower prices ruling during the incoming season, and it is reported there is a spread quotation from Canterbury for new season’s wheat at 5s 7d per bushel. Ryegrass.—There is no improvement to report in this market, and it is almost certain that lower prices will rule during the incoming season. Last season’s stocks have not all been quitted, and as sufficient stocks are still holding last season’s seed, stocks are still "held by merchants, many of the farmers are still holding last season’s seed. On the present appearance qf the market it is unlikely that . new season’s ryegrass,- even the best quality, will exceed 2s 6d per bushel on trucks. . The stock market continues quiet and very little business is being done apart from fat stock for local requirements. Fat cattle are offering freely and prices are easier than for some time back. Fat sheep are also in plentiful supply and prices are fairly firm at recent quotations. Store cattle- are in good demand and with an abundance of feed have the appearance of remaining so for some time. There are very few lines of store sheep offering and any the market meet with ready Fat Cattle.—Prime heavy bullocks, £l3 to £l5 10s; prime medium-weight bullocks, £l-0 10s to £l2; prime heavy heifers, £7 15s to £9 10s; medium heifers, £6 to £7; prime heavy cows, £7 10s to £9 15«: medium cows, £5 10s to £6; prime ox beef, to 30s per 1001 b; prime heifer beef, to 27s 6d per 1001 b. Fat Sheep.—Prime heavy wethers, 26s 6d to 28s 6d; medium-weight wethers, 24s to 25s 6d; lighter wethers, to 235; prime heavy ewes, 18s 6d to 22s 6d; medium ewes, 12s 6d to 14s 6d; prime heavy lambs, 24s to 25s 6d; medium lambs, 22s to 23s 6d. Store Sheep.—Mix sex raped lambs, 18s 6d to 19s 6d; two-tooth ewes, 30s to 32s 6d ; two-tooth v. ethers, 20s to 225; four-tooth wethers, 22s to 23s 6d; four, six, and eighttooth ewes, 28s 6d to 30s. Store Cattle.—Two and three-year steers, £7 15s to £9 10s; two-year steers, £6 to £7 ss; yearling steers, £3 10s to £4 15s; two-year heifers, to £3 10s; old cows, 30s to £2.
