THE PROPOSED CHANGE. WELLINGTON, January 18. In six or seven weeks’ time tlie new buttons and* badges for the New Zealand police force will arrive from Home, and as soon as possible thereafter a start will be made with the new uniforms of lighter mate, ial manufactured in Dunedin. At present the badges are not distinctive enough, and the new design will be en--Y different from that now.in use, and will be made of silver. The -Radges will consist of the Roval Coat of Arms supported bj- two fern haves, and will have at the bottom a scroll with ~l e "brds: “New Zealand Police Force.” lhe new buttons, will also be a distinct improvement on those now used, .jwhich have an unpleasant and. expensive habit of going soft like gelatine in wet or-very-hot weather. Thev will be made of metal surrounded by the words “New Zealand I S’, 1 . 10 ®- In addition, the familiar helmet will be replaced in the' daytime and in fine weather ’. v the shako, supplies of which are to be made by a Wellington firin. ' Contrary to current rumour, the shako will bear an appearance entirely’ different from that of <he French kepi, and wflr be issued , irrespective of the supply’ of uniform doth. At night and ifi"wet weather the dark badges uow in use will be worn.
