VALUELESS CHEQUES.
AN UNSATISFACTORY RECORD. AUCKLAND, January 20. In the Police Court to-day John Albert Roberts, aged 23, described by the police as the man who went on a country jaunt in a motor car and who issued valueless cheques totalling £56 18s, came before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M. In addition to the charges of false pretences Roberts pleaded guilty unlawfully to converting a 'motor car valued at £229, the property of Williams Rental Cars (Ltd.) to his own- use, and the theft of accessories valued at £7. Senior Detective Hammond said that Roberts had been’ in trouble previously. He had been on probation for two years and had received two years’ imprisonment for false pretences. The Magistrate told accused that the report received about him from the probation officer was a bad one. . While on probation his conduct had been unsatisfactory. The only thing to do would be to put Roberts away for a while. He would be sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on each of two chargee, the terms to be cumulative, and he would be detained for reformative detention for a period not exceeding two years.
