Forty-six contracts for road works were advertised by the Southland County last week (states the Southland Times). Tenders were received for about 40, and in several cases there were three or four tenderers. Quite a number were accepted while others are to be advertised again. As this is the slack time of the year with the farmer-contractor, there were more tenderers than usual. Two councillors remarked that the tendering was in many cases close, and on' the whole the work was going to be carried out at less cost than has been the rule for several years past
