NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. FOUR RECORDS BROKEN. ; AUCKLAND, January 22. (The New Zealand swimming championships were opened at the tepid baths this afternoon. The principal race was the 100 Yards Ladies’ Championship of New Zealand, which was won by Miss Ena Stockley for the third year in succession, in the fast time of 67 3-ssec. A Dominion record was established in the 75 Yards Intermediate Girls’ Breast-stroke Championship, which was won by Miss M. Rydon, Auckland, and formerly of Hawke’s Bay, in 65 2-ssec, clipping a second off tho previous record held by Miss D. Breward, of Christchurch. . Miss Sybil Brown, of Auckland, equalled Miss L. Coutts’s record of 32 2-ssec in the 50 Yards Junior Girls’ Championship. The heats of the National 100 Yards Championship were swum. Results:— 100 YARDS LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP. First Heat. —M. Stockley ..* 1 J. Bell ’ 2 M. Jepson ... ... 3 Time, 67 3-ssec. Tire six competitors got away to a perfect start and covered the first lap almost in a straight line. The first turn saw the swimmers still together, with the exception of Miss Page, who was some feet away. Miss Farquhar went slightly ahead over the second lap, but was beaten to the turn in 66 2-3 sec by Miss Stockley who was closely followed by Miss Jepson. Miss Stockley made a bad turn, but made up the leeway over the final lap, and won by a good yard. Miss Bell swam strongly to second place, with Miss Jepson a touch away. ~ Miss Farquhar was fourth, Miss Miller fifth, and Miss Page last. 100 YARDS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. First Heat.—A. A. (Wanganui) 3. The four starters went down the first lap in close company, Miss Rydon leading from Miss Breward. The leaders turned together at 66 2-3 yards, and Miss Rydon drew out to win by a touch. Miss Breward was one yard ahead of Miss Anderson, who beat Miss Broadhead by a foot. Four New Zealand records were broken and one was equalled at the first session of the swimming championships at tire tepid baths on Saturday afternoon, and in the evening the one mile record was lowered by 62 1-5 sec to 23min 36 4-ssec by the Canterbury champion, D. P. Lindsay, who also passed the 880 yards’ mark in the record-breaking time of llmin 40sec. Recently he lowered the 880 yards record to llmin 54 3-ssec. Gordon Bridson won the intermediate boys’ 220 yards championship in 2min 35sec, and broke Cunnold’s record by three seconds, while Leslie Olds (Otago), aged 12, reduced the 100 yards junior boys’ record by 1 l-ssec to 66 3-ssec.‘ ; Swimming in the 75 yards intermediate girls’ breaststroke championship Miss. It was also decided •to allow the invitation of the New Zealand Swimming Association to Misses Couldwell and Robertson to tour New Zealand to lapse, owing to the inability of Miss Couldwell to make tho trip this year. VICTORIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. SYDNEY, January 22. Swimming in the 440 yards championship of Victoria, Takaishi (Japan) won, with Wilson second and Walter (Victoria) third. The Japanese won with the greatest ease in smin 55sec. The 440 yards breaststroke championship resulted as follows:—Steadman (Victoria) 1, Hopkins (Victoria) 2, Stevens (Western Australia) 3, Kelly (New South Wales) 4, Springfield (Queensland) 5. Won by 40 yards. Time, 24min 11 l-ssec. A RECORD LOWERED. AUCKLAND, January 18. In an official attempt at the tepid baths this evening A. D. Adamson lowered L. 1 L. Kronfcld’s 100 metres New Zealand record by three seconds to 64 2-ssec. Adamson swam the first 100 yards in 57 .’4-ssec, which is two-fifths of a second slower than Dowsett’s New Zealand record. Both swimmers meet in the 100 yards Dominion championship here on Saturday. G. Bridson beat Cunnold and Meikle m the 100 yards challenge in 61 l-ssec. The Dominion intermediate record is 61sec. THE JAPANESE IN FORM. MELBOURNE, January 21. The 100 Yards National Swimming Championship of Australia resulted as follows: — Takaishi (Japan) 1, Henry (New South Wales) 2, Grier (Queensland) 3. Won by three yards. Time, 54 2-ssec. As Takaishi is not a resident the title goes to Henry. 100 Yards Backstroke Championship.— • Saitoh (Japan) 1, Boast (Queensland) 2, Johnsen (Victoria) 3. Won by four yards. Time, lmin 10 4-ssec., an Australian record. The title goes to Boast.
