Sir Thomas Lawrence’s famous picture “Pinkie" (a portrait of Miss Mary Moulton Barrett) was knocked down to Sir Joseph Duveen (the well-known art dealer) for 74,000 guineas, after keen bidding. This is the largest sum ever paid for a portrait under the hammer, and it is interesting to record that £160 was all that Lawrence received for painting the picture.
