LOSSES UNHINGE MIND. CHRISTCHURCH, January 12. After losing all the money he had at the races, and being unable to get work, Donald Sutherland, aged 48, attempted to commit suicide at Rakaia on January .7 by drinking a bottle of beer in which he had soaked poisoned wheat. Sutherland was brought before Mr H. T. Lawry, S.M., in the Police Court to-day. Sub-inspector Mathew said that Sutherland had returned from Sydney with £5O after an absence of seven years, and lost it at the races. He seemed still to.be a little weak mentally, but had promised not to attempt to end his life again. Sutherland was convicted and discharged.
