IRON HULK BEACHED.
COLLISION WITH STEAMER WELLINGTON, January 13. The iron hulk Arawata, the property of the Union Company, was beached in a sinking condition shortly after 11 o’clock this morning alongside the Kaiwarra Railway Station. She has a full load of coal on board, and was being brought alongside the steamer Devon, which is anchored in the stream, for bunkering, when she bumped into the steamer and sprang a leak. The tugs Terawhiti and Natone towed her to the shore immediately. It was found she was leaking seriously, and she is now lying with her bows high up on the rocks. It is feared, however, that her back is broken, as the waist of the hulk and her stern are well under water.
The Arawata was originally a passen ger steamer of 567 tons, and was launched at Glasgow in 1875. She had a speed of 15 knots, and she completed the trip from Glasgow to Melbourne in 52 days, including stoppages. She also did the trip from Melbourne to Port Chalmers in five days—at that time the fastest voyage made.
January 14. Although it was at first thought that the iron hulk Arawata had broken her back when she was beached at Kaiwarra yesterday morning, it is now believed that her keel is intact. After an examination this morning the Union Company stated that it was its intention, first to remove the coal ana then to attempt to raise the hulk.
