STEWART ISLAND.
. SEASON’S TOURIST TRAFFIC. INVERCARGILL, January 13. Since the bi-weekly services to Stewart Island began on December 18 no fewer than 1800 passengers have been taken to the island by the Bluff Harbour Board’s tug Theresa Ward. This number is 300 in advance.„of the number of passengers for a similar period in the 1925 season. No doubt the Exxhibition accounted for the smaller number. Stewart Island seems to be steadily growing in popularity as a summer resort, and when the new tug arrives the number of visitors should be substantially increased. The progress made on the Island in the last two years is most noticeable. Quite a large number of Invercargill residents has purchased, or erected, summer cottages there in that period, and the number of boardinghouses has been increased, and those already established renovated. Tennis courts have been laid down, and _ the island now boasts two Ford delivery, vans; a hitherto unprecedented luxury.
