Some concern regarding the Canterbury crops of strawberries was expressed by Mr L. Paynter, Government orchard instructor, at a meeting of the Christchruch Fruitgrowers’ Association. He said that strawberry growers were going to have a bad time. A number of beds were looking very sickly, but at present he was not prepared to state the cause of the trouble. About half the apiarists in New Zealand own from one to four hive 9; hut the other half aggregate among them 97,609 hives, while the one-to*four-hive contingent aggregates only 8420. The total number of hives in the country is 106,089. This number is vouched for by the Government Statistician, Mr Malcolm Fraser. He hae not yet counted the beea.
