A HOUSEMAID’S DUTIES.
CLEANING OF HOTEL BAR. GREYMOUTH, September 7. Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., gave his reserved decision in a case in which a point was raised whether the duties of a housemaid employed at a hotel included scrubbing out the bar. The magistrate’s decision was in the affirmative. The local inspector of awards (Mr Sneddon) proceeded against a Greynaoutli licensee for not paying a housemaid wages according to the award scale, and claimed a penalty of £2O, the issue raised being that the girl was employed and paid as a housemaid-waitress, whereas the work done by her in scrubbing the bar entitled her to the wages of a “general hand.” The Magistrate to-day stated that thero were no authorities directly bearing on the point, but he took the view that the front of the bar was in the same category as the back. It was part of the hotel, and had to be kept clean. He saw no reason to give it exceptional treatment, especially in small country hotels, where it would be an absurdity to except tlie bar from the housemaid’s work. Plaintiff was non-suited.
