The stretch of road between Clarksville and Milton, hitherto the bugbear of the motorist, no longer presents any terrors. Indeed, the improvement in the surface speaks well for the success of the grader. In some parts the road is like a footpath and stands out in sharp contrast to the stretch between Clarendon and Henley (which is a mass of pot-holes) or that between Bulclutha and Lovell’s Flat. A trapper’s license costs £2 10s, so that in the Wellington district alone over £IOOO has been received in fees. The Wellington Acclimatisation Society, which was the first society to acclimatise the opossum, received £1428 last year from the opossum trapping business. The best of the opossum skins come from the shores of Lake Wairarapa, which is within three hours’ motor drive from Wellington. These are the dark-hued, very rich, thickfurred animals, which range the mountains from the Orongorongos down to the lake on the Wairarapa side.
