A woman motorist entered a Gore garage the other day and requested that a puncture should be mended (reports the Ensign). She had wcparienced a flat tyre during her journey to town, and had succeeded in changing over the spare tyre to take the place of the one deflated. The garage man requested the spare rim in order to complete the job. “Oh. I threw it away when I changed the tyre,” was the response. A search in the vicinity of the scene of operations later on revealed the discarded equipment. A by-law which will shortly be brought into force in the Cook Country relates to the use of chains by motor vehicles during the winter. It is proposed that the use of chains should be prohibited altogether on continuous metalled roads (reports the Poverty Bay Herald), and that no chains greater than 121 b in weight should be allowed to be used on any roads in the county. It is probable that a definite date for the enforcement of this by-law will be fixed at the next council meeting.
