THE KAWARAU DAM.

REOPENING OF GATES.

(From Oob Own Correspondent.) . . .CROMWELL, September 11. Activity in the Kawarau eased off during the early part of the week, and only a few companies were operating when the gates were opened on Thursday. Although the river was only slightly below the level of last winter the prospects in many cases were quite satisfactory and sufficient to indicate that rich ground exists. The gates were opened at 11.15 a.m. on Thursday, but it was late in the evening before the effect was noticeable in town. With full effect of the lake water the river rose to about only lft, 6in above what it *?as prior to the closing of the gates, and fc remains steady at that level.
