NEW DEPARTMENT OPENED. WELLINGTON, September 3. Dr E. Marsden, head of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, has entered upon his new duties, and has taken over the charge, as from September 1, of the following branches hitherto attached to other departments:— The geological branch of the Mines Department, the meteorological department of the Dominion Laboratory, the Hector Observatory, the Magnetic Observatory (Christchurch), and the testirtg laboratory of the Main Highways Board. The office of the new department, which is on Wellington terrace, will be open from tomorrow.
